Microsoft Surface Phone Rumored to Include This Special ‘Touch’ (MSFT)

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is embracing the fingerprint. The tech titan’s Surface Phone is reportedly set to have a unique fingerprint sensor. A new patent titled “Fingerprint Detection with Transparent Cover” was submitted by the tech firm in February 2015 and published in August. It has become more apparent that the fingerprint is becoming a huge feature for all smartphone brands.

Microsoft Corporation’s Fingerprint Sensor Patent

We may not see the Surface phone for a long time. But with each passing day or week we still get a glimpse into what its new handsets will be like.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Surface Phone Rumors

Filing a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Surface phone is rumored to come with a unique fingerprint sensor. What makes this is interesting is that the scanner will be integrated on the smartphone’s display. Today, most smartphones have fingerprint sensors on the home button or the rear of the handset.

The patent revealed that a user would key in a fingerprint onto the phone’s display. The sensor on the glass side would then scan the unique ridges of the user’s unique fingerprint. Microsoft would use a filter and a wave guide underneath the display’s glass.

It is also explained that the new technology would work with LED and AMOLED displays.

Experts note that this would free up space on the device because the handset would be thinner.

Here is what the patent states:

“An electronic device includes a transparent cover and a light source disposed at an edge of the transparent cover. The light source is configured to inject light into the transparent cover. The transparent cover guides the light until interaction with a fingerprint ridge at the transparent cover. The electronic device further includes a filter disposed along the transparent cover. The filter is configured to selectively allow the light scattered by the fingerprint ridge to pass through the filter. A detector generates a signal indicative of the scattered light allowed through the filter.”

It has long been noted that it is working on an array of Surface Phones. Reports suggest that the Surface could be released sometime in 2017.

The news of the patent come as Microsoft has killed off the Lumia line of smartphones.

What Will Microsoft Corporation’s Surface Phone be Like?

We won’t fully know what the Surface Phone will be like until the tech firm unveils the device and it hits store shelves. For now, all we have to go on are various rumors and speculations about the handsets.

Right now, it is believed that there will be two types of Surface devices: a consumer variant and a business variant. The former is believed to come with a 5.5-inch display. The latter is rumored to come with a six-inch screen.

Moreover, the smartphones are set to run on Windows 10 Mobile. When it comes to the cameras, it’ll be equipped with a 21-megapixel primary camera and an eight-megapixel selfie snapper. Also, it’ll have Intel’s 14nm Kaby Lake processor. Tech experts also note that it may have eight GB of RAM and maintain the Snapdragon 830 chipset.

It is still rather premature to even discuss Surface’s impact on the smartphone industry. The Microsoft Lumia line maintained a 0.6 percent market share. The iPhone and Samg Galaxy devices are still dominating the smartphone market, and with reports of the iPhone 7 putting forward strong sales numbers, it’s safe to say that the iPhone will maintain its dominance.

The tech giant may need more than just fingerprint sensors to take away others’ market share next year.
