On Monday, July 15, Tesla updated its online design studio and brought several changes in its product lineup and pricing. The company has discontinued some variants and brought new colors for their vehicles as well.
More adjustments to Tesla cars
Over the past year, the company has been constantly fine-tuning its product and pricing. The changes are more visible in the US where federal tax credit was reduced gradually after the company delivered 200,000 electric cars. While some cars became pricier, others became cheaper. On the other hand, the company’s Model 3, Model X, and Model S cars have gone through some transformations as well.
More specifically, Tesla did away with the ‘Standard Range’ variants of Model S and Model X. They will now be available only in ‘Long Range’ and ‘Performance’ versions. This has increased the starting price of both cars with the Model S now starting at $80,000 and Model X starting at $85,000. The Performance models of both the cars will now feature the ‘Ludicrous’ package as standard. The package, which enables 0-60 mph acceleration in 2.4 seconds was earlier available only on the Model S Performance for $20,000.
The change of color
CEO Elon Musk announced last month that their standard car color would be changed from black to white. Instead of bringing the standard white color, the company has made the ‘Pearl While Multi-Coat’ its new standard. Earlier, it was an optional choice available for $1,500. The Model 3 base model is still the Standard Range Plus which is selling for $38,990 with the Pearl White Multi-Coat as the new standard. Considering the price of the paint, it is a $1,000 discount on this car.
Tesla has discontinued the Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive which was earlier available as an ‘off the menu’ item. North American customers can still get the Model 3 Standard Range off-the-menu.
The company is known for tweaking their prices and production lineups often. This is not standard practice in the auto industry. While Model 3 is technically cheaper, you have no other option but to get it in white. Moreover, people who want to buy Model S and Model X have to pay a higher price now, even with the Ludicrous update. Note that Tesla was already offering this to users as a software upgrade. For anyone who specifically bought Ludicrous as an option for $20,000, this could be a bad day to learn about new prices.
