Without a doubt, the successful release of the Model 3 sedan will be Tesla Motors’ greatest achievement this year. It also promises to be the most inclusive vehicle rolled out by the young, luxury automaker. The premium nature of the high-end, electric car brand has long held up a barrier for many Tesla lovers. Since the days of the Roadster, leading up to the more recent Model X SUV and flagship Model S sedan, going prices have made it impossible for a large number of Tesla fans to become Tesla buyers. However, that all changes with the incoming Model 3. Set to go for an assured $35,000 at its most standard, the car stands as the perfect opportunity to secure high-end Tesla style, elegance, sportiness and safety, all at an affordable price.
Speaking about safety, interest has be growing regarding the upcoming Tesla and its standard safety features. More specifically, there are those interested in learning more about the autopilot system of the Model 3. Today, LearnBonds offers an in-depth look at the Model 3 and its safety assurances. Beyond performance, style and fun, Tesla repeatedly states that it prioritizes vehicle safety above all else.
Fully Autonomous
After a long period of teasing the feature, Tesla finally began equipping its luxury electric cars with fully autonomous, self-driving capabilities earlier this year. CEO Elon Musk claims that Tesla drivers who have opted for the feature will begin to notice the enhancements over the next several months.
“Safety should improve significantly due to autonomy features, even if [regulators] disallow no driver present,” Musk stated via Twitter.
There is a lot of interest surround the true benefits of the beefed up Autopilot system. Tesla Motors isn’t revealing else much either. Although, through the help of key experts in the field, we get a decent idea about the performance and safety improvements owners will see in a few months.
Not too long ago, LearnBonds ventured deeply into the Model 3’s price incentives and performance aspects. Judging by the assurances the offered to the public far public thus far, the auto scene can look forward to a game-changing vehicle to roll out in 2017. Entirely self-driving cars
Tesla enthusiasts are much more familiar with the company’s recent Enhanced Autopilot. It has been just over two months since its official release. The electric car giant held back on the update until 2017 settled in. It was initially due in December 2016. This year has already seen Tesla introduce and announce a number of major changes. Beyond the adjustments made to its Supercharger Program and Autopilot, this year will see the long-awaited launch of the company’s affordable Model 3 sedan. Tesla Motors has a massive 2017 to wade through, and a lot of pressure to get things right.
Enhanced Autopilot is only weeks into its launch. The new software will periodically get updates during the course of the year. This will likely to go on unit Tesla decides to showcase the fully autonomous capacity of its cars sometime near the end of 2017.
Despite Tesla getting its fully autonomous, self-driving capabilities ready by year-end, many owners will be barred from fully enjoying their benefits. Full Self-driving Capability will be distributed to specific owners. The availability of its features will depend on jurisdictional validation and regulatory approval, among other things.
For instance, the state of Michigan now allows for self-guided, autonomous cars to be used. This is provide their systems meet certain criteria. Although there are numerous other states and regions across the world which are strongly opposed to self-driving cars moving on public roads, manned or not. Full Self-driving Capability is also sold as a separate Autopilot package, meaning certain system enhancement will come at a financial cost to the owner.
Enhanced Autopilot Vs. Full Self-driving Capabilities
Every Tesla equipped with Autopilot right now holds the same hardware. It includes full 360 ultrasonic sensors, radar and 8 cameras. However, not all of these features are available to use at the moment. Only a portion of the cameras are enabled for Enhanced Autopilot users. Buyers who adopt Full Self-driving Capability will get to enjoy all the benefits of the hardware.
What are these benefits? Well, with Full Self-driving Capability, Tesla claims its electric cars will at all times monitor themselves, their surroundings and self-guide to an extent. Tesla data says the beefed up system will render owners around twice as safe as before. The Autopilot add-on allows “full self-driving in almost all circumstances, at what we believe will be a probability of safety at least twice as good as the average human driver.”
To reiterate, the company does not offer any of these full enhancement at the moment. The luxury car maker has only entered first stages of its Enhanced Autopilot publication. Musk admitted late last year that the update will require a considerable amount of time and effort to pull off. Regardless, updates are now on the way. As more of them make their way to owners, those who have opted for Full Self-driving Capability over Enhanced Autopilot should notice considerable improvements in three months. However, every owner will benefit for the enhancements in varying degrees before Tesla launches its Autopilot with level 5 autonomy.
Who will miss out?
There will be system benefits that Enhanced Autopilot users won’t get to enjoy. Although true envy probably won’t set in until the this year is up. As said earlier, Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-driving Capability are two different packages. Tesla owners who have opted for the former can save up for the Full Self-driving package in the meantime. For prospective Tesla buyers, it would be best to note that upgrading to the level 5 autonomy system costs considerably than choosing it upon purchase.
More Tesla talks
LearnBonds recently covered the Supercharger Network in relation to the Model 3 and its owners. The new year ushered in a number of changes to the economics of the company’s public charging stations. This year will finally see Tesla Motors Inc make a bit of cash from its vast network of public Superchargers. Although the company has assured owners that the transition does not form part of a profit scheme. Regardless, those who have plans to order a new Tesla this year, whether it is the Model S, 3 or X, will form part of less privileged class of the Tesla community.
