Though currently a hot topic within the international gaming community, Sony Corp (ADR) is still to confirm or deny any plans to produce the Playstation Neo or Playstation 4.5. Regardless, this has done little to quell the growing number of rumors erupting around the web. Among these rumors is a large consensus on a few aspects. In particular, many people are sure of the anticipated gaming console’s release date and the influencers if its alleged lower cost.
Sony Playstation 4.5 or Neo 4K?
The console, which could either be called the Playstation 4.5 (PS4.5) or Playstation Neo 4K (PS Neo 4K), is said to have been partially confirmed by a game developer based in France. A slide from AMD’s most recent presentation also alludes to the gadget’s possible arrival. Not many specs are known as of yet, at least none that can be verified. Although the main idea is that the PS4.5/PS Neo 4K will be able to play games in 4K resolution without sacrificing the latest PS’s renowned 60 fsp frame rate.
Sony’s gaming consoles feature processors developed by AMD. It is a steady and longstanding relationship between the two tech companies. The chip maker does have plans to introduce a smaller processor though. It is believed this chip will feature on the next generation of Playstations. The current line of processors make use of a 28-nanometer planar transitor but AMD allegedly wants to transition, or at least partially incorporate, its smaller 14-nanometer FinFET transitors. Though smaller, these new chips could offer better performance overall.
Bearing this, the makers of the Playstation might have to move accordingly, adding fuel to the rising flame of rumors that a new PS console is in the works. If the rumors are anything to go by, Sony would be placed in a tricky situation. The company would either need to give in to AMD or produce a new line of consoles in order to preserve the PS4 as it is. The latter would create more costs for the company and a range of other hassles, not excluding upset investors.
Sony would normally be expect to just fit the old processor to just “fit the old chip to the new size”. But reports say AMD wants to streamline its new chips along with new Zen core CPUs.
How then does Sony run the new hardware without making the current pool of PS4 users feel excluded? The solution could be that PS4 games will be compatible on both systems. The Playstation Neo 4K/4.5, however, would obviously offer a better gaming.
From October onward, Playstation games will have a Neo option, offering better that can be used on the new console. “Neo mode” would essentially offer better graphics quality, letting gamers experience 4K resolution at the same 60 fps play speed.
The general idea is that the Playstation Neo 4K or Playstation 4.5 will be shown or at least mentioned at Sony’s annual E3 event held on June 13 this year. Others believe the company could release it in close proximity with the Playstation VR headset.
