Here’s a look at the Tesla Motors, Inc Gigafactory in a video posted today by YouTuber, Black66. As you’ll see, there’s been a lot of progress since we first got an aerial peek at the complex back in April. You’ll even notice a red stripe at the top of the outside walls as the building begins to show some Tesla Motors branding.
We’ve posted the April Fly-over video below so you can see the progress for yourself.
Here’s a frame grabbed from the video showing progress on the Tesla Gigafactory.
Tesla needs the Gigafactory for the Model 3
Elon Musk recently revealed a timeline for the Model 3 and says that we can expect the Model 3 to be available for pre-orders next year. Musk tweeted that “Model 3, our smaller and lower cost sedan will start production in about 2 years. Fully operational Gigafactory needed.” A later tweet said, ” $35k price, unveil in March, preorders start then”.
Tesla needs to have the Gigafactory up and running before its goal of getting the Model 3 to the market can become a reality. One reason it needs the factory is that it will help Tesla achieve some economies of scale that will allow them to produce batteries at a lower cost which is very important for the lower priced Model 3.
According to several statements from the company, Tesla is ahead of schedule and the Gigafactory should be ready to open in 2016. Construction on the Gigafactory, located outside of Reno, Nev., began in the fall of 2015.
