Apple Inc. is doing its consumers a big disservice by not bringing innovation to their old computers, says Brian Hall – general manager of the Surface brand at Microsoft. Hall in a tweet, which sounded both bemused and annoyed, said “I compete with Apple and respect them. but they ARE doing their customers a disservice at times with old tech…”
Are we expecting too much from Apple?
Previously also, Apple has been criticized before for the old tech in its computers, but the latest censure is noteworthy, as it comes from a high-profile executive.
But is Hall wrong? For instance, MacBook Air has been here since years. It is nice and feels utilitarian. But the MacBook Air is not exciting. It is functional instead of stylish, says CNET. The MacBook Air was redesigned almost six years ago, and the design of the MacBook Pro has not changed since 2012. In addition, many of the Macs have not been updated with the latest processors, which is why Apple’s computer shipments declined 11.5% annually last quarter. Apple, also, does not have a new model for the back-to-school push.
It may not really be the best time to invest in a Mac as Apple Inc. has not given its MacBook Air or MacBook Pro laptops any major revision in years. Even buyers are beginning to notice that Apple’s do not have the latest technology or processors, thus is experiencing low sales.
Maybe it is our own fault as we expect a lot from the tech giant. We should probably just chill and wait for Apple to do what it likes and when it likes. “Or perhaps Apple is slowly weaning us off certain sorts of computers altogether,” says CNET.
An indirect response from Apple
Apple Inc. did not directly commented on it, but this week only, it did (sort of) responded to Hall. The firm launched a new iPad Pro ad and in the ad, the tech giant claims that its tablet is actually a computer now. It means the consumer who buys the tablet (Apple translation: Computer) will also have to buy a stylus (pencil) and a keyboard. This almost appears like airlines that nickel-and-dime you for the extras.
Many, however, think Computer is a single thing that is not heavy. Many of us think that computer can be carried anywhere and works as soon as one starts it up. But, there was a time when we thought computers were things that sat on our desk.
But, it seems likely that this fall, before the holiday season, the tech giant will launch a new Mac computer. Recent rumors suggest a new MacBook Pro with the latest and greatest Intel chips and a new touchscreen keyboard. We hope the rumors are true.
Meanwhile, if you can’t wait, you can purchase a Surface or Surface Book from Microsoft.
