Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple Inc. with the late Steve Jobs, believes that Tesla Inc could create the next technological moonshot – not Apple. Wozniak said in an interview with Bloomberg that Apple is too big to come up with the next big thing in tech, according to a report from Apple Insider.
Wozniak Going to Bet on Tesla
Wozniak said in the interview that Tesla is moving in the “best direction” and the company “put an awful lot of effort into very risky things” to create breakthrough products. He believes that self-driving cars are “probably the biggest, most obvious moonshot” at present.
Tesla has “put a lot of effort into very risky things,” including electric cars, self-driving technology, and efficient transportation systems.
“They started with a car, the Tesla Model S, that made little sense in engineering terms in how much you have to build for what price, and what the market will be,” Wozniak said when talking about the Tesla’s success. “It fits one person’s ideal of this will be the most beautiful, elegant, and simple device to use.”
Talking about Tesla cars, particularly the Model S, Wozniak said:
“It was really built for Elon’s own life. What car would he like, and when things come from yourself, knowing what you would like very much and being in control of it, that’s when you get the best products.”
In addition to electric cars, Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk is also betting big on other transportation projects, including the high-speed Hyperloop transit system. Musk also started up a company called the Boring Company to drill tunnels under cities to create an alternative transport network for commuters.
“Everybody needs transportation in our human life,” Wozniak said.
He said that: “I’m going to bet on Tesla – so many of these off the wall different directions, and they start with a car.”
What Did Wozniak Say About Apple?
Wozniak believes that big companies including Apple Inc. may not be able to come up with the next major breakthrough due to risks.
“Look at the companies like Google and Facebook and Apple and Microsoft that changed the world – and Tesla included. They usually came from young people who didn’t know that what they were doing was so risky, and big companies don’t want to take the risk,” Wozniak said.
Apple Car Project
Rumors suggest that Apple is building an automated car operating system – instead of an all-electric car.
The Cupertino-based tech giant reportedly hired about two dozen BlackBerry engineers to build its operating system in Canada.
Earlier 2016, Apple appointed Dan Dodge to oversee the company’s Project Titan car initiative. Titan is a codename of Apple’s electric car project.
Apple Inc. has always refused to confirm its car ambitions, and made no official comment about its electric car project.
