Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Considers Odd, Future-Proofing Feature for iPhone 8

Apple Inc. iPhones do not come with expandable storage or dual SIM support, but things might change in the near future. Though it will never offer an iPhone with microSD storage as it will dramatically impact iPhone ASPs, the firm could to offer a dual SIM iPhone, notes BGR.

Dual SIM – an odd choice

Apple has made several changes to its iPhone line recently, making the above move kind of odd. Few reasons such as water-resistance have made Apple look for ways to reduce the number of ports and other openings on the iPhone. The device is getting slimmer and more compact with every latest version, making internal space a high-prized commodity for the iPhone.

For these reason, it sounds unlikely that the firm is considering adding support for a second SIM card. But, recently the firm has been awarded a USPTO patent that describes a ‘System, apparatus, and method for controlling access to multiple antennas in mobile devices having multiple SIMs.

This clearly indicates that Apple Inc. has been studying the matter, and might have a clever way to pull it off. But, it no way means that next iPhone or the upcoming ones will have a dual SIM support. Nevertheless, the dual SIM support feature will be a very appealing one for the upcoming iPhone.

Apple eyeing the future

The patent seems to indicate that this type of technology, which includes signal processing and prioritizing, might be very much in demand in future for effective handling of new and even traditional communication standards.

The patent reads, “Wireless communication systems are rapidly growing in usage. Further, wireless communication technology has evolved from voice-only communications to also include the transmission of data, such as Internet and multimedia content.”

Apple Inc. is likely trying to make iPhones future-proof. The contents of the recently granted patent seem to indicate that the firm will design its Dual-SIM technology in such a manner that it will be capable of handling both 4G and 5G signals, simultaneously.

The Cupertino-based firm is also exploring the idea of virtual SIM cards on future iPhones. This alone will make Apple’s Dual-SIM tech stand apart from the ones that rivals like Samsung, Huawei, Asus and others are using, notes Inquisitr.

Will iPhone 8 dual SIM?

Apple’s most important device in years will surely be the iPhone 8. The firm seemingly hit a plateau with the iPhone 6, while the identical appearance of the next two iPhone iterations i.e. the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 failed to impress longtime fans as they were unhappy with the devices’ identical appearance and incremental upgrades.

Dual-SIM technology has been around for years, but the iPhone maker is approaching it from a unique angle. Such features could help it reinstate itself as the innovation leader. And, putting all these in the iPhone 8 will surely shut the critics.
