Microsoft Corporation Surface Brand chief, Panos Panay posted a cryptic tweet hinting at the elusive Surface Phone on May 5. The tweet read “See you in Shanghai. May 23. #MicrosoftEvent #Surface” and Surface fans were quick to decrypt the message as a hint for when the Surface Phone will make its debut. May 23 has come and gone, Microsoft has unveiled a new Surface Pro and the Surface Phone remains a no-show.
It might be very easy to become fixated on the Surface Phone and its delayed unveiling or launch. Yet, a fixation on the Surface Phone will only make you lose sight of the other great devices that are already in the Surface Family. I don’t think that the Surface Phone is coming late to the market. The Surface Phone is in a league of its own and it will come to the market right on schedule. In the meantime, this piece reintroduces you to other members of the Surface family while we await the Surface Phone.
Meet the Surface Pro
The Surface Pro is the cheapest standalone device in the Surface lineup. The entry-level new Surface Pro will set you back $799. The name of the device ‘just “Surface Pro” might be jarring if you have seen the Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4 and you’ve been expecting a Surface Pro 5.
Panays Panos hints that the firm chose to drop the numbering system because the new Surface Pro is the ultimate tablet. In his words, “It’s really important that people understand this is it — this is the product where all four generations have come together, and there’s this massive leap, this meaningful leap that comes with this product…”
The new Surface Pro is a 12-inch powerful tablet running the full version of Windows 10. You can accessorize it with a keyboard and a mouse to transform it into a legit and portable laptop. In addition to the impressive internal specs upgrade, the device boasts a 20% improved performance, a brighter screen, 13.5 hours on battery power and an incredible 1.7-pound weight.
The new Surface Pro is available for Pre-order on Microsoft Store and you can expect orders to start shipping from June 15. The new Surface Pro is available in six models with the prices ranging from $799 for the 128GB/Intel Core M3/4GB RAM model to $2,699 for the 1TB/Core i7/16GB RAM model.
Meet the Surface Laptop
The Surface Laptop is simply performance made personal as Microsoft goes beyond the idea of the traditional laptop to give you the best of Microsoft hardware, Windows, and Office. The Surface Laptop is a touchscreen laptop but it doesn’t have a detachable keyboard – this is a fully fledged laptop and you can’t downgrade it into a tablet.
It, however, sports a sporty and sturdy design – don’t be surprised that you won’t find a single fastener or screw anywhere on the device. The Surface Laptop has a 13.5-inch screen, weighs a mere 1.25kg, runs on Windows 10 S, and it has all your favorite ports and a SurfaceConnect. It has a non-removable battery that can give you 14.5 hours of juice.
The new Surface Laptop is available for Preorder on Microsoft Store and you can expect orders to start shipping from June 15. The new Surface Laptop is available in four models with the prices ranging from $999 for the 128GB/Intel Core i5/4GB RAM model to $2,199 for the 512GB/Core i7/16GB RAM model.
Let’s talk about the Surface Book, again!
I have written about the Surface Book and I have written on how it is much superior to Apple’s MacBook. It might interest you to know that the Surface Book has been refreshed and this incredibly powerful and meticulously crafted device remains the unchallenged ultimate laptop. It has a 5.0MP front camera and an 8MP rear camera with dual microphones and 12-hours of battery life.
More so, Microsoft Surface Book boasts a 13.5″ PixelSense Display that works seamlessly with both your fingers and a Pen. It is built for performance with a light magnesium chassis and it is built for professional grade software. You can detach the touchscreen to use the Surface Book like a tablet and its fulcrum hinge allows you to fold back the Surface Book on itself to use the Draw Mode.
Thankfully, this Surface Book is already on sale in Microsoft Store and there are complimentary free shipping and free returns. The new Surface Book is available in an array of 10 configurations with the prices ranging from $1,499 for the 128GB/Intel Core i5/8GB RAM model to a jaw-dropping $3,199 for the 1TB/Core i7/16GB/dGPU RAM model.
The unrivaled Microsoft Surface Studio sits at the top of the family tree
The Surface Studio is the probably the only device created specifically for creators and designers. With a roomy and adjustable 28-inch PixelSense Display, the Surface Studio can transform your desk into a studio with endless possibilities. The Surface Studio is crafted to get your creative juices flowing with 10-bit color depth and 13.5 million pixels of true-to-life color.
Pairing the Surface Studio with the Surface Dial and Surface Pen gives a whole new meaning to being creative. You can use it upright in Desktop Mode or keep it flat in Studio Mode while its 6th Gen Intel Core processors and discrete NVIDIA GeForce graphics does all the heavy lifting. Surface Studio also helps you unwind when you are done with work with a roomy screen for movies and more than enough power for your favorite Xbox games.
The Surface Studio is already on sale in Microsoft Store and there are complimentary free shipping and free returns. The Surface Studio is available in three simple configurations with the prices ranging from $2,999 for the 1TB/Intel Core i5/8GB RAM /2GB GPU model to an incredible $4,199 for the 2TB/Core i7/32GB RAM/4GB GPU model.
Honorable mentions from Microsoft
This family tree of the Microsoft Surface brand won’t be complete without talking about peripheral devices. Microsoft says the Surface Dial “is a completely new way to interact with technology. Store, customize, access, navigate, and reimagine physical tools in the digital world—from concept to creation.” For a mere $99, you get to unlock your creativity to draw, sketch, and scribble using an intuitive tool that doesn’t break your flow.
The surface Pen allows you to do everything you know pen should be capable of doing (and then some more) with precision legacy Ink on one end and a rubber eraser (that actually works) on the other end. The Surface Pen is designed to give you a feel to a graphite pencil more than 4000 pressure points to help you sketch and shade with precision.
