Microsoft Reducing Support for the Android and iOS versions of the Cortana Application

Ali Raza

Some years after it has appeared on the Android and iOS platforms, Cortana might have just reached the end of the trip. Before long, this application is not going to be on these two influential mobile platforms again. Microsoft released a notice on its support hub stating that the virtual assistant app was going to be deprived of support on the Android and iOS platforms in some locations. This is supposed to kick into action on the 31st of January.

Selected Locations Affected

In a report from The Verge, the affected areas are the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. It is important to note that the United States support hub did not have the same notice. What that implies is that Cortana can be expected to still get full support on both iOS and Android in the United States of America, at least for now. If there is going to be any change later in relation to the US, a notice will be released to that effect.

For those who are dependent on Cortana in any of the affected areas, you should know that your lists and reminders via the application will not be functional again. The synchronization with Microsoft To Do app is still there though, so all hope may not be lost. There is also the process of incorporation into the Microsoft 365 applications.

Cortana: To Survive or Not?

Even at that, it is not easy to consider Cortana surviving for a long time as an independent option to Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa if it is being wiped off from these massive markets. The lasting impact this is going to have on those making use of Cortana is that the application is used during the setting up of Microsoft devices. For this reason, the venture will have to create a kind of alternative to that.

In 2014, Cortana was launched and the launch was with Windows Phone 8.1, it was the last of Microsoft’s couple of attempts to craft its own mobile operating system. It remains an integral part of Windows PCs even though it was without native support on Xbox game consoles at the beginning of this year. The option then was to wire it in with the Xbox.

Halo Infinite Comes into the Picture

If this is an acceptance of defeat on the part of Microsoft or another attempt to utilize Cortana in more efficient ways, only time will tell what the true motive of Microsoft is. That is as far as this latest move to suffocate Cortana is concerned. Some analysts even think it is a sophisticated way of promoting Halo Infinite. Halo Infinite is an anticipated game in the pattern that now has Cortana on the short end of the stick.

The game is expected to trigger the opening of the next-generation hardware from Xbox. The trailer was released at the E3 press conference and it has been generating a lot of buzz from the gaming community. So it seems as Halo Infinite is getting all the promotion, the end of Cortana may just be here.
