Microsoft Corporation and Dropbox have expanded their partnership with the launch of a native Dropbox app for Window 10 devices. The app, built on the Universal Windows platform, supports feature unique to Windows 10 such as Windows Hello, Live Tiles, and Notifications. It will work on PCs and tablets. Microsoft Corporation also plans to introduce the app for Windows 10 mobile devices but has not mentioned a date.
The app is not yet live in Windows Store across all regions and will be rolled out in the next few days, announced Dropbox.
New Microsoft Windows 10 Features
Windows 10 users also have the option of installing the Dropbox desktop client, but it lacks Windows 10-specific features. The new Dropbox app offers a hosts of features and functions, such as:
Drag and drop– Users can easily drag-and-drop files from Windows explorer into the app. They can also move items between folders within the app to copy and paste files.
Quick Search- If you want to find anything, simply type the search term to see the results for your query. There is no need to use the search icon.
Interactive notifications- This feature allows you to accept invites with requiring to launch the app. Interactive notifications are received even when the app is not active.
Add Comments- The new app also allows users to add comments directly to the files and through @mentions, one can notify shared users of any update that you have been working together on.
Quick Access to Recent Files- By using Jump List, you can right-click on the app icon in the taskbar to automatically bring up the list of your most recent files.
Windows Hello support- A particularly interesting update that Microsoft Corporation has made to the Dropbox app is the addition of Windows Hello support. By enabling Windows Hello, you can add an extra layer of protection and easily secure your Dropbox files by using your face, fingerprint, or iris, instead of your password.
Why is it important?
One can obviously use Dropbox with Windows 10- the standard utility that allows you to keep your files in sync with all your devices in a particular folder. The new app is likely being aimed by Dropbox at tablet users who may not feel the need to keep every single file synced to their device. The move is particularly significant, given that Microsoft Corporation now claims over 200mn active Windows 10 devices world over.
The deal with the new app is that it is built exclusively for the Windows 10 platform. It can truly show the features that a great Windows 10 app can have and this is what Microsoft Corporation should be aiming at- making exemplary apps for its platform.
Microsoft, Dropbox Partnership Strengthens
Microsoft Corporation and Dropbox entered into a formal partnership in November 2014. Since then, the two firms have introduced numerous integrations between their two business. Users can easily access product and services offered by the two companies from their respective platforms. For example, on November 25, 2014, Dropbox announced that its mobile apps have been integrated to work with Microsoft Office for iOS and Android devices. This would include the ability to edit Office documents from inside the Dropbox app.
Later on, Microsoft Office users were also allowed to edit their Office files within Dropbox through the web. This was followed by the launch of Windows Phone 8.1 app, an app for Windows 8.1 PCs and tablets before shortly moving to Windows 10.
Welcoming the release of the new app, Microsoft’s Corporate VP of Developer Platform and Evangelism and Chief Evangelist Steve Guggenheimer says on his blog: ‘Our partnership with Dropbox has helped more than 17mn people get more work done on the go. With Windows 10 running on over 200mn devices worldwide, we’re excited to continue to offer our fans easy and convenient access to photos, documents, and files anytime, anywhere’.
