Is Microsoft Surface Phone On-Hold For Android 7.0 Nougat?

Aman Jain

Why it is taking so long for Microsoft Corporation to come up with a Surface Phone? A wild guess is the Windows maker is waiting for Android 7.0 Nougat for its flagship smartphone. Also, it is possible that the Surface Phone will make its comeback with Nokia Android phones in 2017.

Android 7.0 Nougat in Surface Phone – why?

During the Oct. 26 event, when the software giant made no announcement regarding the Surface Phone, speculation started in full swing over the probable reasons for the delay in this the long and overdue announcement. The delay could suggest that the firm is considering Android 7.0 Nougat as the OS, says a report from University Herald.

Such a speculation is supported by the fact that Windows OS has failed to garner popularity when it was launched with the Lumia phones. Performance wise, Android 7.0 Nougat is exceptional because of its notable and radical features that are very useful for the users, notes The Verge. May be this is the reason why the Windows maker may run Android’s latest beta program in their Surface Phones.

However, there has been no information, or any hint from Microsoft Corporation about the same. So, it is best to take this news with a pinch of salt. Also, Chris Cappossela – Microsoft CMO – said in December last year that the Surface Phone is for the Windows fans, as per Business Insider.

Rivals for Surface Phone

Microsoft Corporation ’s Surface Phone is expected to come with and 20MP rear camera and Snapdragon 830. The firm could release three models of the Surface Phone with varying RAM and ROM. But, all will sport a 5.7-inch QHD display, as per TrustedReviews. The phone is expected to debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Feb. 27.

These features do appear impressive, but more devices from rivals will come with similar or even better features next year. OnePlus 4 is expected to launch in 2017 with similar specs, but with price much lower around $399. Also, Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi 6 could come with similar features and same series of Snapdragon chipset. But, the phone is unlikely to go beyond $699.

Nokia – the popular mobile brand in 1990’s – is also expected to make a comeback in 2017 with two new Android phones running on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box. As per a report from Know Your Mobile, the two phones will come in variants – the 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch, and feature a 2K display screen rather than QHD or Super AMOLED panels wrapped in a solid build.

Also, Nokia’s Android phones would run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. As of now, there is no information on the internal storage and memory, but the 5.5-inch is expected to come with a 22MP camera. Another rival to the Surface phone will be Samsung Galaxy S8.
