Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) CEO Mark Zuckerberg envisions a day, in the future, when users will be able to share their thoughts brain to brain using technology. Dropping big hints on the firm’s future goals, the CEO said this will be “ultimate communication technology.”
Shift in Facebook’s focus
“You’ll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too if you’d like,” Mark while speaking during a Q&A session on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Mark replied to the question asked by a user, who was interested in the long-term plans of the firm.
Over the past ten years, the firm has made many efforts to become an intimate part of people’s lives by bringing in user-friendly features starting from plain profile pages, to Wall, Likes, Groups and News Feed.
Over the past year, the firm has moved focus from mass sharing to personal. After, spinning of Messenger as a standalone app for the web and mobile, the firm acquired WhatsApp for $22bn. On VR front, Facebook bought Oculus for creating an atmosphere, where users feel like next to their friends, facing all in real-time. Now, the firm is building on its personal connections efforts by talking about Telepathy, the concept that is not far from reality.
Facebook CEO a true visionary
Even though the studies are focus mainly on motion commands, visionaries such as the Facebook CEO have something bigger in mind. As of now, Mark is talking about a vision that feels no less like a dream, interacting with a system or through the Internet with various people without having to use a keyboard or voice.
“There are a few important trends in human communication that we hope to improve,” Facebook CEO said, adding that lives will improve as communication gets better.
Scientists have got some success in finding ways to create “computer brain interfaces” or enabling tech to translate brain waves into software commands and vice verse.
For instance, the University of Washington is working on a system that allow it to send brain signals from one person to other using internet. Past tests reveal that one participant was able move the finger of other, on a keyboard, just through a thought. However, both were wearing the hats rigged with electrodes.
On Tuesday, Facebook shares closed down 0.04% to $85.76, and year to date, the stock is up over 8%. Over the past 12-months, the stock is up 26%.
