Criminal Steals $15,000 in Cryptocurrency, Ousts Himself By Accident

Max Moeller

A criminal who recently stole $15,000 in cryptocurrency assets turned himself in by accident by sending an email to a detective going after the case. The email was meant for the victim, and was framed as an apology for stealing the assets, reports NJ.com.

The thief, Darren Carter, a 29-year-old man from New Jersey, stole a phone from another man in an airport in California, with the victim being from Tennessee. From there, he went into the victim’s account on one of the best Bitcoin exchanges Coinbase and stole $15,471.31 in assets. He did so by converting them to U.S. fiat via PayPal.

That’s not to mention the fact that Carter was already in jail in Salem County for something entirely different when he was arrested by police in South Jersey this August 26. The phone case had been going for four months at the time, with the victim heading to the police on April 17 to report the case. So, by the time police corroborated the email and found out who did it, Carter was already jailed for something else.

The thief was then sent to a jail in Connecticut, and as of now is unable to pay his bail of $150,000.
