Apple Inc. (AAPL) And NVIDIA Partner To Make “Revolutionary” New Computers

Apple Inc. will reportedly be revealing a redesigned MacBook Pro as well as other Mac hardware next month. The tech giant may have some even more interesting computers down the road, as the Cupertino-based firm is partnering with Nvidia for ‘revolutionary’ new products.

Will it be AMD or Nvidia?

There are three job listings on Nvidia’s database that reference Apple, and the latest listing appeared just last week, found Bloomberg. An ad for a software engineer reads that the successful applicant will assist in producing the “next revolutionary Apple products.” The applicant will be working in partnership with the iPhone maker, and write code to shape and define “the future.”

People assumed that AMD would be in next refreshes of Notebook Macs and Desktop. A refresh of both – a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pros – has been overdue since a long time. Several people have wondered why it is taking Apple so long to update the hardware in this particular lineup.

One reason could be, the tech giant may not be updating the hardware because it had been expecting Polaris to be available for its MacBook Pros and iMac. AMD has promised that the notebook versions of Polaris would be coming out, but we have not seen anything other than the RX 460, 470 and 480 add-in boards, notes Seeking Alpha.

There are chances that we might see new Macs around the same time when Polaris notebook GPUs make a debut. This timing will confirm that Apple Inc. has been making us wait for the Mac refresh because of Polaris. But, Apple has been pursuing different supplier options to have several sources of main components. It began purchasing Intel modems for the iPhone 7 to not rely on Qualcomm as the only source.

Nvidia – how it could benefit Apple?

From what it looks, the tech giant is preparing to switch graphics chips to Nvidia from AMD, notes BGR. However, nothing is confirmed yet. The higher-end Mac machines in Apple’s future lineup will most likely be powered by these Nvidia GPUs. In addition, it is rumored that the tech giant is working on Thunderbolt Displays that have integrated graphics. It could benefit from this partnership as well.

Apple Inc. ’s more portable devices, including the MacBook Air, the MacBook and the 13-inch MacBook Pro, do not feature discrete graphics options currently. They rather depend on integrated graphics chips from Intel.

Since, Apple’s major MacBook Pro announcement is slated for some time next month, so it is likely that the revolutionary products made in partnership with Nvidia will not arrive this year. Nevertheless, the job listings are quite exciting as it appears like the smartphone maker is ready to bring Nvidia hardware back to the Mac line.

“Nvidia’s Pascal GP100 currently offers best-in-class performance, so that would be a desirable upgrade for the Mac Pro,” notes Seeking Alpha.
