Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is quickly squashing rumors that devices may be able to boost the charging time of the Apple Watch significantly by using the hidden port in the wearable computer. The iPhone maker says that it’s putting together a “Made for Apple Watch” program that will fulfill the needs of customers.
According to a post on the Apple official website on Tuesday, the company is set operate a program that will control the specifications of third party accessories for the Apple Watch. The “Made for” programs tend to tightly control the product in question, meaning that Apple isn’t likely to allow the charging bands into its stores.
Apple retains Watch creative control
Apple products remain the main driver of the accessories market for both smartphones and tablets, but the company has always maintained an ambivalent if not downright hostile attitude toward the market. Accessories change the user experience and take money right out of the company’s pocket.
At the same time users tend to demand such a wide range of accessories that it would be undesirable if not impossible for Apple to provide them. The company’s solution is simple. It will let certain firms produce third party add-ons under its “Made for Watch” program. Cupertino will probably begrudgingly tolerate a plethora of extra add-ons, but it will not sanction them officially.
The Made for Watch program calls for beautifully designed bands for users. It’s unlikely to allow the Reverse Strap, a product from former Nike employee Lane Musgrave that will charge the Watch through the diagnostic port while you wear it, into the program as there are no specifications for using the secret diagnostic port for charging contained in the program.
Made for Apple Watch
Apple is charging quite a price for what seem to be small upgrades to the company’s Watch strap, and competition my drive the prices available for a stainless steel strap down, and may even allow those who paid $10,000 to get their hands on a gold Apple Watch to get a hold of a strap that matches that luxury.
Beyonce was among those spotted wearing a special edition of the Apple Watch with a gold strap in the days around the release of the device. If the massive glut in wolrdwide iPhone accessories is any indication, sights like that aren’t likely to stay particularly rare for very long.
