Amazon.com, Inc. is expanding its fulfillment centers across the United States in a bid to meet the growing demand of online shopping. The online retailer now announced that it is opening a new fulfillment center in Monee, IL, a small town with a population of only 5100. For Amazon, “Illinois has been a great place to do business,” said Akash Chauhan, vice president of North American operations at the online retailer.
Monee Fulfillment Center
Amazon wants to expand its fulfillment centers across the country. The company is spending heavily to improve delivery of goods. The online retailer is working on drones and self-driving trucks, and recently the company launched its first-ever branded cargo plane, the Amazon One. The aircraft is a Boeing 767-300 plane that Atlas Air operates – Atlas Air is the same firm that provides cargo services.
Amazon fulfillment centers store products and ship products to customers. The centers also handle product returns.
The e-commerce giant will launch a new 850,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Monee, Illinois. The facility will be used to process orders for small items such as books, electronics and consumer goods.
“We place our fulfillment centers close to customers to provide the fastest possible delivery times, and the growth in Illinois is directly tied to our increasing customer demand,” Chauhan said.
The company did not disclose how many jobs will be created at the new Monee facility but based on the size of the facility, the online retailer could end up employing half the population of the city. The firm says that full-time employees will be offered competitive hourly wages and a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, 401(k) and company stock awards, as well as maternity and parental leave benefits.
In addition, the company will offer Career Choice program to its employees. The program pays 95% of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.
For years, Amazon.com, Inc. has earned a terrible reputation when it comes to the workplace. Former workers say Jeff Bezos and the rest of management put profits over its employees. In a bid to garner positive views from its employees, Amazon is testing out a 30-hour work week.
Amazon in Illinois
In May, Amazon announced that it is opening a second fulfillment center in Joliet, Illinois. The new 700,000 square-foot facility will create more than 2,000 full-time jobs. In June, the company announced that it will open two new fulfillment centers in Edwardsville, Illinois. The facilities will create more than 1,000 full-time jobs and will span more than 700,000 square-feet each. One facility will process orders for larger items like big-screen televisions, sports equipment or kayaks, while the other will handle smaller items such as books, toys and electronics.
Last month, the online retailer announced that it will open a staffed pickup location at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The company signed an agreement with the University of Illinois to build a 2,200-square-foot staffed pickup location, called Amazon@Illinois, in the Illini Union Bookstore on the university campus. Amazon@Illinois will offer students, staff and faculty members a pickup location to get their merchandise ordered through Amazon. They can pick up and return orders from this location centrally located on campus. The new pickup location is scheduled for opening this fall.
