Blockchain technology is used for much more than as a payment solution, as many are coming to realize. In fact, three students at one Indian University, Malla Reddy Engineering College for Women, have put together a blockchain ‘smart voting system’ that will help citizens vote online, reports the Hindu Business Line.
One student, Shivani, shared some insight on her project:
“The poll percentages in rural areas are always higher than that of urban areas. Long queues at the polling stations is one of the reasons.”
The three came up with the idea during what is called the Hexathon – a hackathon put together by the HCCI and asked for new ideas from participants. They won first prize for this blockchain-based system.
Bringing it mainstream
Their team, called Yodha, will be meeting with the State Election Commission to pitch their technology, according to the Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan.
Shivani then further noted the potential for blockchain technology regarding security and privacy:
“Post winning the hackathon, we have been asked to test the solution in gated communities. It is very safe as it is backed by Blockchain technology. It is very difficult to break into this.”
Overall, it’s projects like these that will help push blockchain into the mainstream, as it showcases the many different uses it can have on the world, rather than just exist as the tech underlying Bitcoin that many view it to be.
