Tesla Motors Inc does not only pride itself in producing the most luxurious EVs on the road today. The high-end auto brand truly is among the safest as well. Through its near countless celebrations, launches, and announcements, the U. S. electric car maker never goes too long without reiterating one particular fact. That is, beyond luxury, style and performance, the well-being of the occupants of any Tesla comes first and foremost.
5 people survive Tesla wreckage
This week, the true safety capacity of the Model S was proven in a horrific road accident. Though the car itself was left entirely wrecked, 5 passengers managed to walk away with their lives.
In Pullach, Germany, an 18 year-old young lady was speeding excessively down the motorway when she lost control of her father’s Model S. The young lady in the driver’s seat, perhaps too confident of here own driving abilities, lost control of the vehicle while turning. The $71,000-plus luxury EV was airborne and hurled 82-feet into the air, all this while 5 people were inside the car.
Perhaps if it had been any other car, the five occupants of the vehicle would not have been as fortune as they were. However, it was in fact a Tesla Model S, and after it was rendered no better than scrap metal by its high impact with the ground, all five occupants of the car managed to exit the vehicle and walk away from the wreckage long before emergency responders got to them.
The 5 people were alive and able to walk but didn’t walk away unscathed. Reports suggest that they sustained serious injuries. They were transported to the hospital via helicopter.
Images of the wreckage reveal a totaled Model S in a dirt field. Although the whole front of the car was ruined in the crash, its entire cabin appears relatively unharmed. This was by no means a lucky encounter. If the group had been traveling in a car other than one of Teslas, the impact would have done a lot more damage.
Unlike conventional vehicles, Tesla do not have an engine in the bonnet. It is essentially a second trunk space. As such, the front of the Model S acts as a crumple zone, much like an exaggerated bumper, absorbing the impact undergone by the car. It this innovative thinking on Tesla’s behalf that allowed the 5 passengers to literally walk away from the accident.
Tesla’s Autopilot saves the day
This isn’t the first report of the the Model S’s heroic safety features. Earlier this year, we were given a glimpse of the the road security offered by Tesla’s Autopilot.
While driving down the motorway using Autopilot, a feature that allows for easy hands-free driving, Joshua Brown was nearly sideswiped by a truck joining the interstate road he was on.
The truck driver failed to notice the Model S and proceeded to change lanes unnannonced. Were the car not on Autopilot, Brown claims the track would have crushed his car. Fortunately. The Model S sensors allowed it to see the approaching heavy duty truck, which Brown himself claims to have come out of nowwhere. The Model S automatically swerved to safety. Brown was spared a wrecked luxury EV, as well as the loss of his life, thanks to Tesla and the safety tech it instills in its cars.
Mr. Brown actually has video footage of the incident and recalls it quite well.
“I was driving down the interstate and you can see the boom lift truck in question on the left side of the screen on a joining interstate road,” he begins. “Once the roads merged, the truck tried to get to the exit ramp on the right and never saw my Tesla. I actually wasn’t watching that direction and Tessy was on duty with Autopilot engaged. I became aware on the danger when Tessy alerted me with the ‘immediately take over’ warning chime and the car swerving to right to avoid the side collision.”
Tesla Motors Inc is clearly more than a luxury car maker. Rather, the innovative features instilled in its cars, which many may consider no more than fun perks, actually go a long towards enhancing the safety of its vehicles.
