Alphabet Inc ’s YouTube has been in talks with the camera makers with the purpose of developing a way to allow users live stream 360-degree videos, says a report from BuzzFeed. There are chances that YouTube might offer its help to the camera makers for setting up specifications to allow users stream live 360-degree videos from 360-degree cameras as they currently do using regular cameras.
YouTube taking next step in 360-degree videos
Presently, the feature comes with a select number of 360-degree cameras, and the video they produce is of low quality, and is designed for the benefit of the operators. Most cameras that come with the ability to produce 360-degree videos shoot several videos at the same time, and once filming is done, they only pull together the finalized footage.
Such a process works fine for the videos that a user might want to upload sometime later, but for live streaming, it is important that a platform knows the exact specs of each camera, and at the same time it should also be capable of processing the information into a coherent video for the stream.
YouTube may be able to do this processing provided it is capable of hammering out industry standards with manufacturers. Alternatively, it could speak with makers, who own cameras that are powerful enough to put video from multiple sources together on the fly, BuzzFeed says. YouTube declined to make any comments on the report, and it has even not set any timeline for the launch, the report said.
YouTube has made a series of bets on 360-degree videos, and these talks are the latest. YouTube started offering support to interactive format last March onwards or about 6 months earlier than Facebook added 360-degree video to its News Feeds. Few month later, it added Google Cardboard support as well.
Alphabet to trick jihadis
In separate news, Alphabet Inc has announced a pilot scheme under which it will show anti-radicalisation to the Jihadi sympathisers instead of the extremism-related words they search on Google. This means people, who are at the risk of radicalization, will be presented with internet links that are the exact opposite of what they were searching for.
One of the senior Alphabet Inc executives – Dr. Anthony House – revealed the pilot scheme to the MPs, who are scrutinizing the role that the Internet firms are playing in combating extremism. “We are working on counter-narratives around the world. This year one of the things we’re looking at is we are running two pilot programmes,” House said.
One program will be to make sure these types of views are more discoverable while the other is to make sure that people are served with counter narratives whenever they put potentially damaging search terms into firms search engine.
At 11.42 EST, Alphabet shares were down 2.34% at $762.54. Year to date, the stock is down almost 3% while in the last one-year, it is up over 42%.
