Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) Cuts Model X Seats, Fills Event

Paul Shea

Tesla Motors Inc  is on the cusp of a major achievement. After more than three years of waiting, the firm is set to ship the first Model X EV SUVs to buyers on Tuesday, September 29. As we get closer to the event more and more details about the car have been revealed. The most notable recent change, revealed late on Thursday evening, will allow fewer people to sit in the Model X.

Tesla Motors has added, at no extra or reduced cost, an option for people to have a 6 seat version of the Model X shipped to them. The change was reported on the Tesla Motors Club forums on Thursday by a forum member with a Signature booking. The Model X buyer had already ordered their car, but Tesla Motors reached out to offer the new seating option.

The new seating layout, which can be seen in the image above, will involve putting two separate seats in the middle row of the Model X. Those seats will move independent of each other, unlike the connected seats that occupy the second row of the car in the seven seat version of the EV.

Some might think that those opting for a six seat Model X are giving up something for nothing, but not everybody is looking to fill their SUV with people. Some Tesla Motors fans may prefer to get their hands on a car that’s roomier and more comfortable. That’s the sort of experience that the six seat version provides.

Tesla Motors needs the Model X to be a hit. Elon Musk reckons that the car is “arguably better SUV than the Model S is a sedan.” He’s banking on the launch of the device setting his firm on a path toward 500,000 shipped cars in 2020.

Next year, Mr. Musk predicted in a recent call, the Model X and Model S will be built in his Fremont factory at a rate of 1,600-1,800 per week. First things first though, Elon Musk has planned a big party to launch the Model X, but the guest list is already full.

Tesla Motors event is full

Tesla Motors Inc sent out invites to its Model X launch event on Thursday September 25, but it seems that Elon Musk’s Fremont factory couldn’t fit everybody who was looking to go.

Just a couple of hours after the invites went out to Tesla Motors fans on Thursday morning the event was declared full and further attempts to gain entry were rebuffed.

Hype for the Model X is high, and more than 25,000 people have already put down $5,000 or more in order to secure their shipment. That, and the huge number of Tesla Motors fans, and Model S owners, in the area around Fremont, means there was always going to be huge demand for entry to the Model X launch event.

We’ll find out the full extent of what Tesla Motors has to offer when we finally get to see the Model X on Tuesday, September 29. For the time being, our preview of the EV SUV will give you the info you need to decide whether the car is worth any thought at all.
