Microvision Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS) stock jumped on Wednesday after rumors emerged that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) may be trying to get its hands on the firm. Microvision is a big holder of apps in the Augmented Reality, or AR, space. Apple has been collecting firms with talent and tools in the area.
Rumors that Apple might be looking to buy the company were driven by a spike in volume in trading this morning and a blog post from an investor following the firm. Shares in the firm quickly jumped up to more than $3.40 on the volume spike after opening at $3.27. Shares in the firm have gained more than 9% in recent days.
Microvision might be an Apple target
Microvision is worth more than $150 million, which could make it a big acquisition for Apple. The firm tends to concentrate its purchases on small technology firms and tends to buy them for the talent at their disposal rather than sales.

Apple has been known to buy into firms that have their hands on lots of patents, and most of the takeover talk is concentrated on Microvision’s VR IP.
$MVIS has how many patents linked to Virtual reality,,answer a ton

Even if Microvision is not a target for Apple right now, it may be on the buying list of another firm in the AR world. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), (NASDAQ:GOOGL), Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) have all made inroads into the space and all could do with the bevy of patents that Microvision has to offer.
Microvision owns 233 patents related to the AR world, but it’s not clear how useful they are, or whether Apple is really interested.
These are just rumors at this stage and, as we’ve seen so far in 2015, M&A talk very often has little to rely on other than a good imagination and a wish that something would happen.
The blog post that set off at least some of the Microvision-Apple talk was written by a shareholder in the smaller firm. The author has interest in seeing the deal happen, and the speculation may be just wishful thinking.
The writer of the post says that ” I don’t mind the idea of a rejected buyout offer, but I don’t like the idea of being bought out… at least not yet.”
Apple gets deep into AR
Apple confirmed earlier this week that it had bought Metaio, an augmented reality firm that creates tools for tablet AR experiences, and the firm is expected to show off its first AR experiences in a new Apple Maps app set to arrive at WWDC.
Apple is going to get into AR in a big way in the next few years along with the rest of the big tech firms. Whether or not that future involves Microvision remains to be seen.
