BlackBerry Ltd Hits Blackphone’s Silent Circle With Hard Facts

Paul Shea

BlackBerry Ltd , says it offers the most secure Android experience, but one start up has a different view. The team from Silent Circle, the firm working on Blackphone,, said that the PRIV’s security looks a whole lot like 2007 tech on a 2015 smart phone.

blackberry ltd (BBRY) Priv

BlackBerry chief security officer David Kleidermacher felt the need to respond to the critique despite the difference in relative power between the firms. Despite the fact that BlackBerry has dropped off the leader table for smart phone sales, the firm is still considered a fairly major tech concern. Silent Circle, though improving sales, is not in the same league.

BlackBerry strikes back

In an Inside BlackBerry blog post on Tuesday Mr. Kleidermacher said “At BlackBerry, we avoid denigrating other people’s products or making misleading comparisons.” The attack was clearly aimed at silent Circle who had indeed disparaged the features of the PRIV.

Mr. Kleidermacher went on to espouse BlackBerry’s vision of the PRIV. He said that the firm’s version of Android was indeed the most secure on the market, and that people should trust BlackBerry, a firm with a reputation and a commitment to security over other phone makers.

He added some of the technical details that BlackBerry Ltd , seeks to include in some future update to the PRIV. The phone runs on Android 5.1.1 right now, but the firm will update it to Android 6.0 just as soon as it’s ready.

It’s not really about BlackBerry or BlackPhone

Both BlackBerry and Blackphone are setting forth their own visions of security on Android. The Silent Circle team certainly has some backing for their opinion on the BlackBerry PRIV. The device is, for sure full of holes that can extract user data. The features that the firm boasts will protect user data have yet to be tested by third parties and a consensus on Waterloo’s security has yet to emerge.

On top of that BlackBerry as a company, despite making its brand central to the PRIV’s credentials, may not care all that much about certain kinds of security. Blackphone is more pointed at consumers worried about widespread spying and data loss. That’s something that the BlackBerry PRIV may not really protect against.

For both firms, however, there is a real elephant in the room. While fighting over the tiny niche of Android premium smart phone buyers who care about security, Apple Inc. is gaining a very public reputation for keeping user data safe.

BlackBerry Ltd , reckons that it will be profitable in hardware by next year, something that would be a major feat fore the firm. That profitability, however, will come with a significant loss of scale. Standing beside the iPhone, neither the Blackphone or the PRIV are going to be smash hit smart phones this holiday season.
