Want a Deal on a Tesla? Here’s How You Can Get The Musk Family Discount

Tesla Motors is building electric cars and its CEO Elon Musk is the chairman of a solar power firm. The firm is at the forefront of pushing a transition from burning fossil fuels to using cleaner sources of energy for transport. Musk is known for being unusual. His generosity toward mankind is is becoming legendary with plans to help save the planet and colonize Mars just in case we need it. But when it comes to discounts on the cars he builds, everyone gets the same discount – none.  More on this in a minute but first…

Introducing Open AI

Tesla Motors Elon Musk wants to build domestic robots after he has spent considerable time and resources building EVs and space rockets. Musk is tackling the project of building domestic robots through a non-profit called OpenAI. OpenAI is a nonprofit AI research firm that has Elon Musk and Sam Altman (President Y Combinator) as its co-chair. OpenAI was launched in December 2015 when it secured $1B in funding from the likes of Altman, Musk, Peter Thiel, and Jessica Livingston.

Tesla Motors IncIn a blog post posted on Monday, Elon Musk and others noted that “OpenAI’s mission is to build safe AI, and ensure AI’s benefits are as widely and evenly distributed as possible. We’re trying to build AI as part of a larger community, and we want to share our plans and capabilities along the way.”

Some folks might find it somewhat hard to create a connection between Musk’s interest in AI and Tesla’s goal of building EVs. However, Tesla Motors is working on self-driving cars and its autopilot program has opened up discussion on the future of transportation. OpenAI might not necessarily build self-driving cars but it could provide Tesla with valuable insight on how to improve the AI that drives its cars.

More so, OpenAI says it plans to “build an agent that can perform a complex task specified by language, and ask for clarification about the task if it’s ambiguous”. People can control Autopilot using an app on their smartphones to “Summon” the car. More so, some people have rigged up voice control on Autopilot using Amazon Echo. OpenAI’s interest in chatbots could be very instrumental in helping Tesla build a dynamic voice-control system for Autopilot.

Elon Musk doesn’t offer Tesla discounts to Family

Many people might have reservations about asking a billionaire family member for money. However, if Elon Musk is a relative, most people won’t think twice before asking him for a Tesla or even a discount on a Tesla. That’s exactly what played out this weekend when Lyndon Rive, SolarCity CEO and Musk’s cousin asked Elon Musk if he could get a discount on an EV. However, it seems the only people getting gifts from Elon are Tesla owners.

In his words, “I asked, ‘Elon, hey can I have a family discount’ and his answer is, ‘Yeah absolutely. Go to TeslaMotor.com, buy the car online, and the price you see there is the family discount” Rive went on to say, “Everyone gets a family discount.”

Similarly, in May, Maye Musk, Elon’s mother revealed that she is way down the list on the 400,000 waiting line for the Model 3. She says, “Because I waited a few days before I signed up, I am way down on the list,” she says. “I won’t be able to jump the queue, even though I have connections. The others were lining up outside, and they deserve to be first.”
