Tesla Motors Inc Autopilot update plans were recently made available to EV Obsession. A user with screenname Aldebaran, provided exclusive information about hardware updates that will accompany the much-expected introduction of Tesla Autopilot 8.0.
Triple camera with next Tesla update?
It must be noted that the information was shared by the leakester in April/May itself. The leakster said the automaker will include a new triple camera mounted in the rearview mirror housing. In addition, it will include a noise generator as well to assist in warning pedestrians that a mostly silent Tesla electric car is approaching. The hardware may or may not already be installed on cars currently coming off the assembly line.
Tesla Motors Inc is always very mysterious about such information. It discourages people that way from waiting to purchase a Tesla car, until they think it is perfected. The cars will never be perfected, believes CEO – Elon Musk. Infact, around 20 running changes are made each week. The best time to purchase a new Tesla is right now, said Musk.
Last spring also, a schematic showing the new triple camera surfaced on the web. When the EV firm introduced the Model 3, the CEO hinted that the second phase of the electric car’s introduction would amaze and surprise everyone. He could have meant that the Model 3 would be the first production car to offer Level 3 or even Level 4 autonomous driving. In Level 5, the driver has no ability to control the operation of the electric car at all: no throttle, no brake pedal, and no steering wheel.
Many unanswered questions
The details are quite uncertain at this time, but it seems quite safe to say that one of the advantages of the triple camera will be the ability to better detect objects that are lower or higher than the centerline of the car. The lack of a triple camera may have played a part in the crash of the Model S on May 7 that resulted in the death of driver – Joshua Brown.
In the crash, the Model S actually failed to detect a semi-trailer crossing the road in front of the electric car. However, Tesla did not come up with the new camera idea after that incident; it was in development even before the unfortunate death of Brown.
Recently, Tesla Motors Inc CEO has gone on record, and said that fully autonomous cars will be in the market sooner than most people are expecting. The Model 3 goes into production next year. So, was Musk suggesting that this car will end the wait. Well, there is no answers for that now. Also, there is one more question is – What role will the new triple cam play in making autonomous driving possible? There is no answer to this question also now.
What we do know for certain is that investigations by the US Senate into the Model S car crash, and Consumer Reports to disable Autopilot are unlikely to slow Tesla CEO down in his quest to bring autonomous vehicles to the market.
