Apple Inc. ’s dominance is being challenged by the Galaxy S8 of Samsung. Samsung’s Galaxy S8 is expected to include its new voice-based digital assistant, which will challenge Apple’s Siri, says a report from Forbes.
Bixby to give Samsung a stronger foothold in AI
Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of the most anticipated devices as many were disappointed with the Galaxy Note 7. The Korean firm has made a few notable acquisitions over the last couple of months to help its mobile business interests. And, the most notable is Viv Labs.
Samsung acquired Viv Labs, and the technology from this AI (artificial intelligence) platform will be used into the software of Samsung’s upcoming flagship. Using the S Voice application, the previous Galaxy devices supported voice interaction, but the inclusion of a new voice-powered digital assistant should give the Korean firm an AI presence in all of the apps of S8, reports SamMobile. The voice-powered digital assistant could be called Bixby.
Chris Brigham, Adam Cheyer, and Dag Kittlaus founded Viv Labs. This team also spun out the research from the SRI Artificial Intelligence Center, resulting in another popular voice-based assistant known as Siri. As we all know, Siri is familiar to more users, and is better established in popular culture than even Google Assistant. Now, to have the same team working on the solution of the Galaxy S8 is an impressive coup from Samsung, notes Forbes.
Can Galaxy S8 pip Apple iPhone?
In addition, the voice-powered digital assistant gives the Korean firm an even stronger foothold into the world of digital AI alongside the like of Google’s imaginatively named Google Assistant, Apple Inc. ’s Siri, and Microsoft’s Cortana.
Previously, Samsung has fought back against Google’s strict requirement for Android certification, and came out second-best. How will the search giant react to the Korean firm stepping into the voice assistant mode on an Android device will be interesting addition to Android developments of 2017, says Forbes.
Samsung Galaxy S8 is turning out to be a device that will make a number of technological leaps forward for the Korean firm. Though its the case with all the new smartphones (not to forget Apple Inc. ’s next-gen iPhone), the S8, however, “has an added burden in that some of Samsung’s technology that should have been established in the Note 7 phablet will have to be reintroduced by the Galaxy S8, along with the S8’s own forward steps,” says Forbes.
And, the inclusion of AI of Viv Lab in the Galaxy S8 is only one of those steps. Earlier this year, the Korean firm confirmed that the S8 would contain the new digital assistant. However, we do not know much about the extent of Bixby’s capabilities right now except the fact that Samsung’s native apps will be able to make use of the voice assistant.
