BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY) Losing President Obama and Kim Kardashian

Blackberry Ltd (BBRY) Obama and Kardashian

BlackBerry Ltd was considered the most secure device for corporate and government usage, but better offerings from a rival led many elite customers to consider replacing the device. Recently, Kim Kardashian hinted at giving up her BlackBerry device, and now another loyal fan, President Obama too has switched to another brand after securing the permission to replace his BlackBerry.

President not happy with the new phone

President Obama’s isn’t thrilled with this new phone. Speaking at ‘The Tonight Show’ this week, he said, “I get the thing, and they’re all like, ‘Well, Mr. President, for security reasons … it doesn’t take pictures, you can’t text, the phone doesn’t work….you can’t play your music on it.’ Basically, it’s like, does your three year old have one of those play phones?”

For past few years, we have been listening to Obama’s jokes about his awful phone situation. The BlackBerry device that he owned when he came into office was considered surprisingly high-tech, but it didn’t take much time for the situation to change. Back in 2010, Obama said he did not enjoy using his BlackBerry device, and then a few years ago, he lamented that he had to keep away from an iPhone due to security concerns.

Last year, Obama discussed his BlackBerry Ltd on Jimmy Kimmel’s show where he started laughing after a single person applauded. Referring to him, the President said, “The one old guy there. He’s my age. Somebody my generation.”

Which brand is Obama using now?

Though he didn’t specify which brand device he was using, it seems like pretty much everything is a possibility. The White House had tested Android phones for secure usage, claimed a report in the WSJ back in 2014. Also, a report this year in ‘The New York Times’ said that some White House staffers had decided to upgrade to iPhones.

At that time, the Times said that Obama was still using a ‘specially modified, highly secure BlackBerry.’ Therefore, possibly he has moved on to some other device in the months since then, or Obama switched to a new BlackBerry device from old one. However, on the show, he made it sound like he’s done with BlackBerry.

BlackBerry to lose another loyal user

Separately, Kardashian – probably the highest-profile BlackBerry Ltd user on earth and a die-hard BlackBerry Bold fan – said previously that she likes using the physical keyboards, but since, the device is not available anymore in the stores, therefore, she hoards them up after making the purchases on eBay.

However, it seems now that her best attempts at hoarding have not been sufficient, and the time has come for her to give up the device. She appeared in an interview with Recode’s Kara Swisher, where she admitted that it had become a major problem to track down the Blackberry Bold model she likes, and said, she could soon give it up, and might, go for an iPhone 6S instead.
