Renewable Energy Report: Amazon.com, Inc (AMZN)’s Huge Move Into Wind Farms

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. , announced that it is building a new 189 megawatt (MW) wind farm in Hardin County, Ohio. The wind farm, called Amazon Wind Farm US Central 2, will generate 530,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of wind energy annually. The facility is expected to become operational in December 2017.

The Amazon Wind Farm US Central 2 is the company’s fifth renewable energy project in the United States. The e-commerce company said that it is working with EverPower to construct, own, and operate the new wind farm.

The e-commerce giant’s second wind farm in Ohio will deliver energy onto the electric grid powering AWS data centers located in the AWS US East (Ohio) and AWS US East (N. Virginia) regions.

The wind facility will generate a total of 2.2 million MWh of energy annually, enough to power almost 200,000 U.S. homes.

Last month, Amazon announced plans to build a 253-megawatt wind farm in Texas. Located Scurry County, Amazon Wind Farm Texas will be the company’s largest renewable wind project. The wind farm will produce 1,000,000 megawatt hours of electricity every year, enough energy to power almost 90,000 U.S. homes.

Clean Energy To Power Data Centers

Amazon.com, Inc. is undertaking several clean energy initiatives, including wind and solar facilities to add renewable energy to the electrical grids that supplying power to Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers.

The Hardin County plant joins Amazon Wind Farm US Central (100MW) in Paulding County, which the company announced in November 2015 and will start producing wind energy in May 2017. The company’s other renewable energy projects include an 80-MW solar plant in Virginia, and the 100-MW Fowler Ridge wind farm in Indiana. Construction is underway on the company’s 280-MW wind farm in North Carolina. The facility is expected to begin generating electricity at the end of this year.

In November 2014, AWS shared its long-term commitment to achieve 100% renewable energy usage for its global infrastructure footprint. The company wants to achieve its goal of 50% renewable energy use by the end of 2017.

The e-commerce company said that it is investing in wind and solar projects to generate clean energy to power its cloud data centers. The e-commerce company also continues to innovate in its facilities and equipment to increase energy efficiency, as well as to advocate for federal and state policies aimed at creating a favorable renewable energy environment.

“We remain committed to achieving our long-term goal of powering the AWS Cloud with 100 percent renewable energy,” Peter DeSantis, vice president of infrastructure at AWS, said in a statement. “There are lots of things that go into making this a reality, including governments implementing policies that stimulate cost-effective renewable energy production, businesses that buy that energy, economical renewable projects from our development partners and utilities, as well as technological and operational innovation that drives greater efficiencies in our global infrastructure. We continue to push on all of these fronts to stay well ahead of our renewable energy goals.”

For the third quarter, Amazon .reported a 55% increase in revenue from Amazon Web Services to $3.23 billion, versus the average estimate of $3.19 billion, according to market research firm FactSet Street.
