Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is Doing Well (Almost) Everywhere
Cowen analyst Oliver Chen observed that there is positive traffic seen in US stores. This talks a lot about the real change the firm has brought about in the store experience. Even abroad, 10 out of the 11 markets in which the firm operates are in black.
UBS’ Michael Lasser, who is one of Wall Street’s top retailing analysts, is also impressed by the firm but to a lesser extent. Speaking as a guest on CNBC, he said that the firm’s growth is impressive considering the ‘broader retail environment’ and ‘some of the questions about the consumer.’ Wal-Mart had its Q1 2017 earnings call yesterday.
The analyst said ‘I think that talks about the consistency of the business… to the consumable nature of the business and the geographic distribution.’ However, Lasser questioned if Wal-Mart can sustain margins over the longer-term. He concluded it might take many quarters before ‘we see any evidence’ that the firm’s initiatives are ‘working.’
