Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) Fills Gaps in its Workforce

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ)
Verizon Communications Inc. declared on Friday that it is deploying thousands of more staff and contractors to serve users during the ongoing strike. The move comes just as the annual meeting of shareholders is expected to take place on Thursday. The staff on special assignment and contractors are either already enrolled or have recently passed from the firm’s technical training classes in Virginia. They will take charge of all the duties of the striking workforce, in the field, in network facilities as well as in customer service centers.

Verizon Communications Inc. Gives Last Ditch Offer to Striking Workers

Just a day prior to the announcement (on Thursday), the firm gave union leaders its last, best and final contract offer. These leaders stood in for 36,000 striking workers. The offer included a 7.5% wage raise over the term of the contract, continued access to high quality healthcare at cheap rates, good retirement benefits, continued job security for eligible staff, etc. However, it did not deal with concerns of being shifted from job to job. In response to the same, the firm said that such flexibility is needed because landlines are becoming a thing of the past and other growth areas are hard to come by. The strike is now running for nearly 3 weeks.

With this offer, the firm appears to have an upper hand. When raising revenue becomes hard, one way of lifting profits is to cut costs. Usually, labor is the biggest expense. This strike has been called by 2 unions and the events have taken ugly turns recently. In many ways, the firm has little choice but to play tough. Since the wireless market has hardly any scope for growth, the focus is more on stealing users from rivals than getting new ones. Wireline business is in decline and broadband isn’t what it used to be.

Looking for other means, the firm is investing in mobile and video. The plan is to leverage the vast network to deliver mobile and video advertising. That was why it had brought AOL and is believed to be after Yahoo. No matter how many wrong things these two firms themselves did, they do have desirable ad platforms.

The new workforce has also received a helping hand from more than 1,000 employees who opted out of the strike. They have resolved tens of thousands each of repair dispatches and inquiries in customer service centers. They have also fulfilled thousands of new Fios orders.
Commenting on the move, Bob Mudge, president of Verizon’s wireline network operations said that while they would prefer to have more senior people doing the job, the feedback so far has been good. Each day, more and more customers are rating the firm highly as a result of their inquiries and issues that are being successfully resolved in call centers and in the field. Bob added that they are taking more steps to make sure that the services are available as users deserve and expect. The staff is proudly working hard in the customers’ homes and businesses and they all are getting the job done.
