Tesla Motors Inc has been an inspiration for several automakers, and add one more to that list now. Maserati – a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles – has announced they will be offering a “Very different” electric car, notes a report from TechTimes.
Fedeli slams Tesla
Maserati engineering chief – Roberto Fedeli – in an interview with ‘Car and Driver,’ revealed that an electric car model is in development. Fedeli couldn’t resist slamming the current group of popular electric cars including Tesla – the leader of the industry.
Fedeli made several attacks on Tesla, and claimed that though it makes 50,000 units every year, the vehicles are not the best in the market. He also criticized its solutions, calling them lackluster. Fedeli said the quality and execution of Tesla’s electric cars was comparable with those of the famed German automakers, but from back in the 1970’s and not where they are at present.
Fedeli – an Italian engineering guru – played a pivotal role in the creation of some of the best modern vehicles of Ferrari. He received orders from FCA boss – Segio Marchionne – to release a Maserati electric vehicle soon.
Maserati EV – what to expect?
Fedeli expects to unveil an EV in 2019, and might begin with the production by early 2020. He added that the electric vehicle will be different from the ones that are already there in the market and that are released later. Fedeli said a low number of units of the electric vehicle will be made, indicating that it won’t be a direct competitor to Tesla Motors Inc , notes TechTimes.
Maserati will release a sleek grand touring coupe instead of a sedan or an SUV. “We will be last (with a production EV), and we have to arrive to the market with something different. Very different,” Fedeli said. Fedeli says they are looking forward to make a green vehicle that is fun to drive. He believes the only thrilling aspect of EVs at present is breakneck acceleration, but it gets dampened on twisty roads because of the sheer weight of those lithium-ion batteries.
Therefore, the Maserati EV would need to be lighter on its feet, and also need to find a way to make sure there is no roaring gas engine under the hood. This makes Maserati’s 2020 goal a realistic one. “The EV is something different and we have to [give] the car [Maserati character] without having one of our most important parameters,” Fedeli said.
Fedeli must have generated a lot of curiosity among the enthusiasts, who might be interested in knowing what kind of electric car Maserati would come up. Seems like the car won’t be released to compete with Tesla Motors Inc , but will most likely it will be an automobile masterpiece nonetheless.
