Tesla Motors Inc won’t be attending this year’s North American International Auto Show. Apart from the EV firm, many other big names will also be missing from the show – Bentley, Mini and Jaguar Land Rover, says a report from mLive.
No empty spaces
Though the big names are giving the event a pass, it does not mean there will be empty spaces in the showroom at the Cobo Center. “If I could double the size of Cobo, I could fill a whole other building,” said Detroit auto show spokesman, Max Muncey.
“You’re going to have a little ebb and flow every year,” said Muncey. “… Our show just wasn’t a fit for their marketing program in 2016.”
On Thursday, confirming that Tesla Motors Inc and other big names will be missing from the event, Muncey said the extra space was instantly acquired by the other car makers such as Aston Martin, who has not attended the Detroit auto show since 2009.
Muncey further said 30 to 40 brands will make use of the 700,000 sq/ft mail floor this year. The show will witness the unveiling of 40 new cars. The show will start from Jan. 9, 2016 with an offsite exhibition called The Gallery. On the day, almost $7m in ultra-luxury cars will be exhibited.
On Jan. 11 and 12, Media previews are scheduled while Jan. 13 and 14 have been reserved for industry previews. A charity preview will be hosted on Jan. 15. The show opens to the public on Jan. 16, and will run through Jan. 24.
Tesla Motors lobbying for direct sales model in Michigan
Tesla Motors Inc also pulled its name from the Los Angeles auto show in November. For a long time Tesla has been lobbying in state capital Lansing to win approval for its direct sales model in Michigan. Last year, the state blocked the direct sales of new cars except through franchised dealers.
In October 2014, Gov. Rick Snyder signed the bill that made the Tesla Motors direct sales model illegal in Michigan. The ruling was backed by the majority of state officials. The law also enjoyed the backing of many Tesla rivals including GM.
Owing to the ruling, Tesla Motors Inc is not even allowed to promote its cars in the region by opening showrooms. Also, the firm can’t even service the cars in Michigan. Presently, potential buyers are required to visit Tesla showrooms in other state or country to buy their favorite car.
