Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KRX:005930) now has another flagship smartphone to take on apart from the iPhone 7. The LG G5 has been announced at the Mobile World Congress 2016. LG has been regularly releasing newer models in this series, such as G2, G3, etc. However, this time it is not just an incremental change. The unveiling happened during the ‘Play Begins’ event at the MWC.
What is Known about the LG G5
Apart from the usual desirable elements like having an expansion slot and a removable battery, the G5 also has a metal body. The phone gives many hints about where LG is heading.
The phenomenon of ‘Internet of Things’ is giving rise to tinkerers who want to set up and customize their hardware exactly the way they want. It appears that LG has acknowledged the rise of this trend, by going for a modular design in the G5. This basically means that you will be able to turn the G5 into a device having multiple add-on functionalities based on your choice of modules.
So far only two such modules have been disclosed. One of them is a high-end camera module aimed at offering additional functionality and a better hold as if it were a DSLR. It will also boost the battery capacity of the G5 by 1,200 mAh. The module will come with its own buttons for power, shutter, etc. The other module is aimed at audio instead of pictures. It is essentially a high-fidelity audio player. It can be used separately as well (without the G5).
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (ADR) Galaxy S7 Rumored to Have the Same Processor
Under the hood, the LG G5 holds a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. This is the same one the Galaxy S7 is expected to have for non-Asian markets. Even the support for expandable memory which the G5 has is expected to be re-introduced in the Galaxy S7.
Among other specifications, the G5 will have 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a 2,800 mAh battery. As for the OS, it will ship with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). This line of smartphones has been known for screens and the G5 is no exception. It has a 5.3 inch screen that displays a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels, clocking the ppi at 554.
In terms of built-in cameras, there will be two on the rear: a 16MP one and an 8MP wide angle one. LG boasts that this 8MP one has the widest angle (135 degrees) of all smartphone cameras available. The front camera is 8MP.
As for connectivity, there is a USB Type-C 2.0 port that is USB 3.0 compatible, NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. The phone weighs 159g and is 149.4 x 73.9 mm on the face and ranges between 7.7 and 8.6 mm in thickness. It will be available in four colors: Silver, Titan, Gold, and Pink.
There will also be ‘companion devices’ for the G5. At present only six such accessories have been detailed, but as with modules, more will be announced soon. One such accessory is a high-end earphone that will work not just with the G5 but with all LG smartphones.
No pricing information of any kind is currently known. It is rumored that availability will begin in early April.
