Netflix, Inc. , which plans to enter India soon, will stream a specially edited version of a Bollywood film epic Gangs of Wasseypur, says a report from the Hollywood Reporter. In 2012, the film premiered at Cannes in the Director’s Fortnight section.
Preparing for Indian launch
The film has been directed by Anurag Kashyap, and is in two parts. Netflix will stream it as an eight-part series on its platform worldwide. Apart from Cannes, the film has also been showed in other festivals, including Sundance.
On Monday, speaking at the Film Bazaar in Goa, Kashyap said the decision by Netflix “reflects how digital distribution can play a role in expanding a film’s audience after its theatrical release.” The decision is important from Netflix’s point of view as both Netflix, Inc. and Amazon are planning to make a debut in India next year
The film has been co-produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, and the North American rights for the film are with Cinelicious. On Netflix, the film will stream in the first week of December, and will be subtitled in French, English, Chinese, Spanish and Arabic.
The movie is based on the coal mafia in India’s Jharkhand state and stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui (The Lunchbox), Manoj Bajpai and actresses Huma Qureshi and Richa Chadha. Digital rights aggregator, Film Karavan sold 20 titles to Netflix including Piku, which stars Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan. The film will stream in January.
Speaking to THR, Film Karavan co-founder Pooja Kohli Taneja, said, “The fact that mainstream Bollywood films are being subtitled in various languages for global streaming indicates at the potential of Indian films seeking an audience beyond the diaspora.”
Netflix ramping movie ambitions
