Microsoft Corporation introduced a new desktop computer on Wednesday in New York City. The Surface Studio, the company’s first ever desktop computer, looks to be an amazing device designed for creativity and productivity. The 28-inch all-in-one PC ships with a standard Surface Pen, an updated Microsoft Sculpt mouse, and keyboard. The Studio will be available in limited quantities this holiday for $2,999, $3,499, or $4,199, depending on what hardware you choose, according to a report in The Verge.
Microsoft Surface Studio
The Surface Studio can be transformed from a workstation into a powerful digital canvas. With a stunning ultra-HD 4.5K screen, the Studio delivers 63% more pixels than a state-of-the-art 4K TV, Microsoft said. The Studio works with pen, touch and Surface Dial, a new input device designed for the creative process that lets you use two hands on the screen to compose and create in all new ways.
“We totally believe that Surface changes the way you produce, the way you create, the way you learn,” Panos Panay, who leads Microsoft’s devices team, said. “The product I’m going to show you is all of that — but it’s one step further. It’s going to seem familiar, but it’s going to feel different.”
Microsoft claims that the Studio has the “world’s thinnest LCD monitor ever built” at 12.5mm. The touchscreen display is contained in a forged aluminum enclosure and measures 28 inches across. The display outputs 13.5 million pixels, which is 63% more than a 4K television, according to Panay.
The display has a 3:2 aspect ratio with 192 pixels per inch. The computer is powered by Intel’s 6th generation processors, and has an Nvidia GTX 980M GPU in the premium model, with a 965M in the lower-priced configurations.
The software giant said that the Studio is designed for “how people naturally create and bring ideas to life.” The 28-inch screen can be converted from Desktop Mode to Studio Mode. In the Studio Mode, it sits at a 20-degree angle, the same angle as a standard drafting board, making it ideal for sketching, writing and designing.
The Studio works Surface Dial, a new peripheral designed for the creative process. It integrates with Windows 10 to work with the computer for a faster and more intuitive way to scroll, zoom and navigate.
The Dial also enables a set of unique experiences exclusive to Studio. When you place the Dial directly on the screen, it brings up a set of digital tools specific to the app that is open, allowing people to more seamlessly move through their workflow.
For example, with Surface Dial, artists can change the color or the size of their brush tip as they paint without ever moving the pen away from the screen.
“The combination of Dial, pen and touch creates a more immersive and tactile way for people to create in digital environments,” Microsoft said.
Powerful Surface Book
Microsoft Corporation also launched Surface Book with Performance Base. The three new Surface Book models feature 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processors. They feature the graphics processing power more than twice the as the original Surface Book.
Apple is holding a media event on October 27 where it is expected to unveil three new laptops: a new 13-inch MacBook; a new 13-inch MacBook Pro; and a new 15-inch MacBook Pro. In addition, the event is likely to include a new iMac desktop, MacBook Air, as well as a new standalone 5K monitor.
