Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is rumored to be building a premium smartphone, dubbed the Surface Phone.
The purported Windows 10-powered phone will be a strong competitor to the iPhone, according to the rumors mill. The device is said to feature a unique design, a powerful processor, and productivity-focused applications.
The Surface Phone would be more than just a phone. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had confirmed that Redmond is interested in building “more phones, but they will not look like phones that are there today.”
As I mentioned in my earlier article, there is no clarity about Microsoft’s mobile business strategy. But Nadella told the company’s shareholders last year that they aren’t exiting the mobile business and plan to build more phones.
The Surface Phone is expected to be an innovative device. By looking at Nadella’s statements and rumors, it looks like the device will target corporate and professional users.
Here is everything we so far know about the purported Surface Phone.
Surface Phone and Augmented Reality
The premium Microsoft smartphone is expected to come with augmented reality (AR) support. Microsoft is betting big on AR and we believe that its ultimate mobile device will come with AR capabilities.
Windows Central columnist Jason Ward believes the Phone will offer both pen support and AR glasses, based on Microsoft’s HoloLens technology, in 2018. The smartphone could feature AR glasses that will allow users to enjoy a “basic but useful AR experience.” The glasses are expected to show 3D images, alerts, and apps.
Surface Phone Rumors, Specs, Features
Rumors suggest that the Surface Phone line will have three models: a consumer edition; a business edition; and an enthusiast model.
The base model is expected to feature 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, while the enthusiast edition is likely to get 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. The business model is rumored to come with 6GB RAM and 128GB of storage.
The higher-end model or business edition is expected to use a 5.7-inch FHD display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor. Rumors indicate that the other two models will feature Snapdragon 820 or Snapdragon 821 processors.
The Phone is expected to be a productivity-focused handset, offering a native support for Win32 apps. If Microsoft makes the device to run Win32 apps, it could push many iOS and Android users to move to a Windows phone.
Meanwhile, the Surface Phone is expected to feature a 20-megapixel rear camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. There is expected to be an 8-megapixel camera front-facing camera.
Surface Phone Release Date and Price
The Surface Phone is rumored to cost between $699-$1100. The base model is expected to get a price tag of $699, while the high-end phones will be offered at $1100, according to the rumors mill.
As far as the release date is concerned, the Surface Phone is expected to arrive in 2018. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has yet to confirm the existence of the Surface Phone but rumors suggest that the device will be released sometime in 2018.
