Facebook Inc ‘s Mark Zuckerberg is not one to make bogus claims or empty promises, but his recent bold assertions might make even the boldest of futurists quiver. Facebook already owns tons of data based on the data and information that its 1.7B daily active users share on the online platform that bears it name. Facebook (the firm) also owns the biggest messaging app, WhatsApp with its 900M daily active users, it owns Messenger with its 700M Daily Active Users and it owns Instagram.
Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will become better than humans in the next five to ten years. Zuckerberg in an interview with Fast Company says, ‘One of our goals for the next five to 10 years… is to basically get better than human level at all of the primary human senses: vision, hearing, language, general cognition.” Humans might still have an edge over Facebook in areas of taste and smell, for the time being. He says “Taste and smell, we’re not that worried about, for now”.
Facebook to become smarter than humans
Facebook makes most of its money from ads and it has been able to stay ahead in the ads space because it is able to target ads to users. Facebook is able to pair ads to users because it can deploy its AI to know the kind of ads that would interest them based on the pages they like, the pages their friends like, and the kinds of posts that they read, among other things.
Facebook Inc has done some serious work in the AI space. Its AI could recognize you in a group photo and it can spot you in a picture even if your face is not visible. The firm has deployed its AI to more practically use when it unveiled M in its Messenger App. Facebook has entrenched itself deeply in the life of users as it holds tons of data on user lifestyle, patterns, and inclinations.
Zuckerberg says its AI push in Messenger will give the virtual assistance the power to make Siri, Cortana, and Google Now look like jokes. The firm says its AI would offer the best in class system that would be able to filter the huge data that humans might not be able to handle. Jay Parikh, Facebook VP Engr says ‘There’s just going to be a lot more data generated about what’s happening in the world… ‘If there’s 10x or 20x or 50x more things happening around you in the world, then you’re going to need these really, really intelligent systems like.
The race to AI just got smarter
AI is the next frontier that all tech firms want to conquer. AI is behind Google’s self-driving car project, Tesla Motors has deployed AI in its autopilot mode, Twitter uses AI push news into your feed, Apple has it at work in Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana is taking bold strides. Now, Facebook has made a bold claim that beats the dreams of every other player in the AI space. It would be interesting to see how other tech firms react in a bid to deploy the smartest AI system on the planet.
