Apple revolutionizes the research methods

Experts at Duke University, John Hopkins and Oregon Health and Science University will run the new studies. The experts will be able to conduct human studies through ResearchKit by making users submit various personal data via their iPhones.

Apple iPhone includes an array of sensors that will be used by the studies for sorting the data, and help advance a variety of other efforts. The autism study will make use of the iPhone camera for taking photos of the kids, and use new emotion detection algorithms to assess their emotional response to specific videos, said Apple.

Apple Inc. ‘s Jeff Williams said it is an honor for the firm to work with the world-class medical names, and provide them with tools that can help in better understanding of the diseases that will eventually help people lead healthier lives. “In just six months, ResearchKit apps studying everything from asthma and diabetes to Parkinson’s disease, are already providing insights to scientists around the world and more than 100,000 participants are choosing to contribute their data to advance science and medical research,” the executive said in a statement.

ResearchKit- a better tool for data collection

Around 6 months back, Apple entered into a similar deal with IBM, who came up with a new health unit, known as Watson health, to deepen its relationship with Apple. Watson health makes use of the data collected with Apple’s HealthKit and ResearchKit to provide info to several other firms such as Johnson and Johnson and Medtronic.

These firms can then combine the data with the services they offer to the healthcare firms. On its end, Apple makes efforts to join Watson-based apps with the HealthKit and ResearchKit.

In March, Apple Inc. came up with the ResearchKit to allow users contribute to the research in health and medicine. The tool, which is an open source platform, enjoys the support of many third-party apps. The tool and its iOS app, tracks data from multiple third-party apps, and shows all the info at a central location.

IBM says its new unit will combine the old electronic health records with the new ones based on Apple’s health tool. “We are convinced that by the size and scale of what we’re doing we can transform this industry,” IBM said that time.

At around 11 am EDT, Apple shares were down 0.33% at $111.48. Year to date, the stock is down almost 1% while in the last one-year, it is up almost 16%.
