Apple Inc. (AAPL) Casting Reality Show: Planet of the Apps

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)

Apple Inc. has announced an open casting call for an unscripted series about the world of apps and the developers who create them. The U.S. tech giant revealed its plans for a reality TV show about app developers earlier this year. On Tuesday, the company posted a casting call for the reality series, Planet of the Apps. To participate, the company is inviting all app creators. The selected developers will have the chance to receive hands-on guidance from some of the most influential experts in the tech community, featured placement on the App Store, and funding from top-tier VCs.

Apple Seeking 100 Talented App Developers

According to a report published on The Verge, the casting call is asking for “100 of the world’s most talented app creators.” The show organizers are requesting that would-be participants send in information about their prospective app as well as a one-minute video profile of themselves and their team.

Online applications are being accepted now through Friday, August 26, according to the Planet of the Apps’ website. To apply, developers must have an iOS, macOS, tvOS, or watchOS app in a beta or functional state by October 21. During the show, developers will present their work.

The Planet of the Apps is being co-produced by Apple Inc. and Propagate, a newly-launched production company co-owned by Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens, according to 9to5Mach.

In a statement, the production company said that Planet of the Apps is teaming up with Product Hunt on a four city tour in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and New York. The events will be an opportunity to meet other tech entrepreneurs and hear from the team behind the series.

Dates will be released on the Planet of the Apps website shortly, Propagate said.

“Over 2 million apps are available on the App Store, with new apps published every day,” the co-CEOs of Propagate said in a statement. “Planet of the Apps will give app creators the chance to break through and share their ideas with the world. This is an exciting format that taps into what is driving culture today. We can’t wait to see the groundbreaking ideas accepted for the show grow into viable businesses.”

9to5Mach reported that the casting call is seeking app creators who have a vision to “shape the future, solve real problems, and inspire change within our daily lives. We can really tell their stories as we explore how apps are developed and created and incubated,” Silverman said.

When Show Is Coming

The companies did not disclose when the show will air. But they are expected to start filming later this year in Los Angeles and run through early 2017.

A report from The Verge suggesting that Planet of the Apps show will only be available through Apple’s own platforms (Apple TV, iTunes). It is still not clear whether the show will be picked up by traditional TV or cable networks or streaming services like Netflix.

The interested developers should visit the series website, planetoftheapps.com, to apply and more information.

In other news, Apple’s Macbook shipments continue to fall. Earlier this year, the company revealed that it would boost its Macbook lineup for 2016.

Shares of Apple Inc. are down over 9% for the year.
