Analysts at Barclays Research claim that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will release curved, bezel-free iPhones in 2017. The analysts – Blayne Curtis, Christopher Hemmelgarn, Thomas O’Malley and Jerry Zhang – said in a research note that we’ll see new 5-inch and 5.8-inch iPhones with curved, bezel-free designs next year, according to reports from 9to5Mac and Mac Rumors.
Reports suggested that Apple is making a completely redesigned iPhone 8. The phone will be released in September 2017 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. The next smartphone is expected to be a game-changer with a revolutionary design and features.
Citing sources within Apple’s supply chain, the analysts said that the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus with bezel-less design will have 5-inch and 5.8-inch screens, respectively. The company used the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays in the iPhone 7. “Larger and Bezel-less – iPhone 8 design didn’t sound 100% locked down but we believe the move is to a bezel-less design with screen sizes getting larger and curved edges in the original envelope. The iPhone 8 moves to 5″ (from 4.7″) and the Plus moves to 5.8″ (from 5.5″),” the analyst said.
Previously, John Gruber, who is famous Apple blogger and podcaster, said that Apple is going to launch an all-glass body iPhone 8 with curved-edged display technology. Gruber noted that there won’t be any bezels or borders. IHS analyst Kevin Wang said the 2017 iPhone will include a “dual-curve” OLED display that covers the left and right edges of the device.
OLED Display Technology
As previous reports suggested, the iPhone 8 will feature OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) display, which is better than LCD because they create their own light and can be thinner and lighter than an LCD (liquid crystal) display. OLED uses less battery due to how it relays pixels, and is more flexible than LCD displays. Also, OLEDs reduce chance of scratches and screen cracks.
Barclays Research analysts believe that the only 5.8-inch model will use OLED display technology. The company’s primary OLED suppliers are said to be Samsung and LG, joined by Foxconn-owned Sharp by 2018.
Apple iPhone 8 Rumors
Earlier, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a report that the iPhone 8 will feature glass front and back design like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s. The famous Apple analyst also believes that the phone will use either a stainless steel or aluminum metal casing with higher end models likely to feature stainless steel.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is rumored to be working on a long-range wireless charging technology. Reports suggest that the company has hired engineers to work on wireless charging for the new iPhone. Moreover, Apple is reportedly working with suppliers for wireless charging chips.
Rumors suggest that Apple will remove the iPhone’s iconic home button in the iPhone 8. The home button will be replaced with fingerprint sensors that would be built into the screen, according to a report from Bloomberg.
In addition, the 2017 iPhone is said to come with iris scanning feature, according to Apple’s supply chain. The iris scanning technology will scan the iris of your eye and protect your device from unauthorized access.
Moreover, new reports suggest that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will start mass production of AirPods wireless earbuds in December with initial production round of about 10 million units. It is not clear whether the company will launch the earbuds in December.
