Apple Inc. took the world by storm when it killed the time-tested, trusted, and proven 3.5mm jack in the iPhone 7. Audiophiles must now use the lightning port to listen to music on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. However, more interesting is the unveiling of the Airpod – Apple’s wireless headphones. Cyber space is already filled with arguments for and against the AirPod but the fact remains that the AirPod could become a huge platform for contextual AI products.
Apple wanted to build up enough buzz for the AirPod and the hype is necessary because the AirPod sports a novel technology. If it gets off on the wrong foot, it might never become a hit in the consumer market – the ill-fated Google Glass is a perfect example. Tim Cook didn’t open up a preorder portal for the Airpod after the unveiling and the device wasn’t supposed to be on sale until late October. However, breaking news suggests that Apple has delayed the launch of the AirPod.
Apple AirPods are not yet ready for the market
Apple Inc. has announced that its much-hyped AirPod won’t be to the market in late October as earlier planned. The firm says it needs “a little more time” for some fixes before the AirPod is ready for the market. The firm declined to reveal whether the delay in the launch was due to a software issue or a hardware issue. Nonetheless, one won’t be wrong to posit that the delay was caused by a mix of software and hardware glitches.
In a statement made available to TechCrunch, the iPhone maker says, “The early response to AirPods has been incredible. We don’t believe in shipping a product before it’s ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers.”
The news about the delay in the launch of the AirPod comes one day ahead of the firm’s scheduled product event to unveil a new MacBook Pro. It appears that Apple doesn’t want to taint the on-stage event with the ‘bad news’ of a delayed AirPod launch. Hence, the firm choose to let the cat out of the bag before the rumors about the delay starts filtering out.
Here’s what reviewers think about the AirPod
Apple Inc. gave out some pre-production (not finished products) units of the AirPod to tech reviewers in order to get objective third-party feedback before the launch of the device. The reviews of the AirPod are mixed but most reviewers admit that the AirPod could be insanely great. It appears that Apple wants to fix some of the issues that the reviewers observed before it starts shipping the AirPod out. Below are some AirPod reviews from popular tech reviewers.
Steve Kovach of Business Insider observes that the AirPod “fit nicely in my ears, they sound fine, and Apple finally solved the annoying Bluetooth pairing process… At the same time, a lot about the AirPods make it apparent that this is a version one product, especially when it comes to controlling your music. And that design is likely to remain controversial. ”
Mattew Panzarino of TechCrunch observes that AirPod’s “sound quality is very solid. Nice thumpy bass and crisp highs produce a very listenable sound, though it’s far from audiophile quality. These are very good and very loud earbuds that produce sound quality right in line with their $160 price”.
Aaron Brown of Express observes that “AirPods are incredibly impressive… The Apple wireless headphones are comfortable to wear, easy to set-up and sound good… On the negative side, not everyone is going to like the design as, until people get use to them, they do look a bit odd.”
