Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) Working on “Ambitious New PC Game Project”

Amazon Game Studios NASDAQ:AMZN

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has had little involvement in the world of gaming, apart from making mobile games. That is about to change as the firm is branching out further in the gaming industry. It has been announced that it is working on an “ambitious new PC game project using the latest technology.”

The gaming industry has been getting a lot of public attention recently, with Valve getting involved in the PS4 VS Xbox One battle. However, Amazon’s announcement is sure to arouse the interest of gamers with some big names being hired for the project.

Amazon Seeks Top Talent for Project

A job post on Gamsutra said that Amazon wanted to build “a team of top talent” for the project. So far they have certainly succeeded in doing so.  Game designers Kim Swift and Clint Hocking have already been hired. The two have worked on some very successful games in the past including Portal, Far Cry, and Splinter Cell. Earlier this year, Amazon acquired game developer Double Helix Games, which is best known for creating Silent Hill:Homecoming for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Amazon have also spent quite a bit in order to license the CryEngine, which is used in games such as Evolve and Crysis. It’s clear that the firm is taking its venture further into the gaming industry very seriously. What exactly the outcome will be remains to be seen, but Amazon are sparing no effort in creating excitement amongst gamers, stating “games have just scratched the surface in their power to unite players and will produce some of the future’s most influential voices in media and art.”

Amazon Overcomes Thin Game History

Up to this point Amazon has only made a few mobile games, but given the high profile hiring, and money being invested in the project, the firm looks set to make a mark on the world of PC gaming and may very well venture into the console market.

The console market, is of course still dominated by Microsoft and Sony. However, the Xbox One VS PS4 battle got very interesting recently with the announcement that Valve is entering the market with the “Steam Machine”. The console which will start from $449, will be on sale later this year . Valve is currently the world’s biggest PC game seller and the Steam Machine is designed to run its Steam software, along with its PC games of which there are thousands.

Sony Still the Leader

Sony recently announced that it will be releasing two new versions of the PS4 and it is currently well in the lead in the console market. However, given Valve’s entry to the market, and Amazon’s activity, the market appears to be getting more competitive. Sony and Microsoft are still the two leading giants of the gaming world but firms like Valve and Amazon are likely to have their say.

The Steam Machine could well serve to blur the lines between the PC and console gaming market, and cause the two to become much more related. Amazon too,  could  indeed effect the ongoing Xbox One Ps4 battle with their new project.
