HERMES, the Netflix Translation Service and its Downfalls

Michael Booker

Netflix introduces HERMES, the first online subtitling and translation test and indexing system by a primary content creator. Hermes is the 90-minute Netflix translator test. It is used by Netflix fulfillment associates, to qualify freelancers for subtitling jobs with the world’s leading internet entertainment service.

The company can use HERMES not only to vet translators, but also to pair them with jobs that play to their strengths. HERMES invites users to help generate subtitles for Netflix’s list of content in more than 20 different languages. They’ll serve as contractors through local associate firms and be paid based on the amount of translation and subtitling.

Netflix is not only the love of its fast-growing binge-watching global fans but also of freelancers looking for work. Though, as it proceeds to expand globally, the need for translators is growing as it appears to support users in different new regions. Management states it is nearing a limit at which English won’t be the first viewing experience on Netflix. Netflix said it is ending its subtitling and translation test program and indexing system to later testing.

While HERMES might be able to accomplish what it is supposed to do, getting the work done by more or less experienced freelance translators may not be the best option. Without carefully checking their credentials and experience and without a proven translation process and extra proofreading, getting accurate translation services may be a hassle.

Still, we will review the Netflix HERMES Test:

The first difficulty is passing Netflix’s entrance test via their dedicated HERMES online door. If you look at online discussion forums, the success measure is shallow as you need high scores to pass the test, with each language calculated differently based on the availability of qualified translators.

Here’s how the HERMES test works.

    Register your details here https://tests.hermes.nflx.io/

It will provide you your unique number beginning with an H plus eight digits. You will get your H-number by text.

It will text you a unique URL which is the sequence of the Netflix HERMES URL plus your H-number. You can’t conduct the test on your mobile but only on a computer.

Open the link on your computer and log in with your mobile number and your H-number to be used to the Hermes test. There should be five or six questionnaires, of which the first four are MCQ (multiple choice questions), and the last two are subtitling test tasks. You have nearly two hours to complete.

Make sure you have good internet access because you will need to run video content.

You will get your result after a week, but depending on how many candidates attempt the test at any one time, you might get your result right away or after a few weeks.

The test aims to evaluate your language abilities based on how high you can convey expressions from one language to another, staying as accurate as possible to the real dialogue.

The test consists of thousands of random combinations of questions so that no two tests should be identical. The series includes multiple choice questions given at a precisely timed speed, intended to test the candidate’s knowledge to understand English, translate local phrases into their target language, recognize both grammatical and technical mistakes and offer accurate translation service.

The Backstory

Matt: I am bilingual Korean/English. I assumed it would be fun to attempt the admission test and see if I could improve on to be continued to Netflix’s pool of freelance subtitle translators. Little did I understand that such a process has many defects and is intended to separate the bulk of applicants. In a nutshell, Netflix was a game of its media coverage success when it publicized its translation chance. The system could not work with the volume of requests, and people had been waiting for weeks to catch about their admission test results.

Netflix finding out the freelance translators straight may be a hint that the in-between “vendors” are not giving translators fairly to get adequate quality. Though it will include general project management work from the Netflix team, they’ll probably be able to check the quality level of the translations they pick.

Benefits and Risks

For a company that needs translation work, such a translator trial platform can analyze their search for translators.

Moreover, it helps to control the quality level of translations, and the absence of a common register for global translators could be paid for. A translator can also be justified based on its translation product. It is noted that translators do not represent the same level of ability across styles. One could shine at translating sitcom series but be poor in translating Sci-Fi, for example.

As for the risks of this recruitment program, the prices granted to subtitling professionals are constantly revised downwards. Since there is no mutual contract, these professionals could find themselves in an uncertain position. Ultimately, the race of maximum profitability is at the heart of the happening. In the words of professional translators, this could lead to a drop in quality and therefore provide lower quality translations.
