Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has done a very good job of keeping the details of the interior of the Model 3 away from the media. When it unveiled the Model 3 in March, the event took place at night and the best shots from the event only showed the exterior of the car. Tesla has ensured that pictures of the Model 3 interior do not surface in all official releases and photoshoots for the car.
The mass-market Model 3 is the car that could make or mar Tesla Motors Inc. Hence, you can understand why Musk is going the extra mile to ensure that he has nailed the interior of the Model 3 before he releases pictures to the public. Breaking news indicates that Tesla has poached a design chief from Volvo to help with the design of the Model 3’s interior.
Musk hires Volvo’s Interior design chief
On Monday, news broke that Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has hired Anders Bell from Swedish carmaker Volvo. Bell is the Senior Director of Engineering at Volvo and he will come on board Tesla as the Head of Interior Engineering. Bell built his career at Volvo since joining the firm in 1998. While at Volvo, Bell oversaw the design of the interior of the Volvo S60L 2015, and the SPA cross carline front seat system used in the Volvo XC90 2015.
Bell also had a 4-year stint in China where he led the Interior and Climate engineering team for the new ‘Volvo Cars China’. Some of the leaks and rumors on the interior of the Model 3 suggest that the car will sport a minimalist interior and an innovative HVAC system. Leaked images suggest that the car won’t have air vents and an instrument cluster on the dashboard. In fact, a Tesla engineer has said that the Model 3 will sport “a really unique ventilation system without traditional vents but only a single slot.”
Tesla has always had issues with the interior of its cars because critics often opine that the interior of its cars doesn’t live up to the luxury branding and price tag the cars. Hence, Bell’s arrival at the firm should infuse a fresh perspective into how Musk designs the interiors of his cars.
The Model 3 can make or mar Tesla
The main reason Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) went ninja-mode on the Model 3 interior is that the firm is yet to sure that it has nailed the Model 3 interior.
Musk has hinted that the interior of the Model 3 will be hugely different from the rare pictures that we’ve seen. Hence, the firm doesn’t want to court unnecessary backlash when people have built expectations on the interior pictures that could be very different from they’ll find in the actual car.
Tesla can’t afford to make mistakes with the Model 3 because the car is going to the mass market. People who drive the Model S and Model X can be forgiven because they are often tech-savvy, eco-conscious early adopter – Model 3 buyers won’t be so forgiving. If the Model 3 succeeds, the firm will divest its branding a niche automaker who makes cool EV toys for the rich. The success of the Model will also help Tesla build enough momentum to break out into mass adoption for EVs.
