Apple Inc. Will Star Dr. Dre in its First Original TV Production

Mvusi Ngubane

Apple Inc. is determined to make its venture into the TV industry a successful one. In order to ensure this, the U.S. i-device maker knows more than most that only the best and most unique content will do. News this week reports that Apple got legendary rapper and Beats co-founder Dr. Dre to star in an original scripted TV series.

According to sources, Dre won’t only be starring in the new production called Vital Signs, but is also listed as one of the show’s executive producers. Vital Signs is said to be a hard-hitting real life-based drama that features Andre Young, better known as Dr. Dre.

The show will be entirely funded by Apple Inc., although Dre will be among its producers. Dre has had a close relationship with the maker of the iPhone since the company bought Beats Electronics back in 2014. The buyout was worth $3 Billion.

Dre also produced the Oscar nominated and award winning Staight Outta Compton, a drama-intense biographical film about N.W.A, his former hip hop group. It appears the rap legend has acquired a taste for Hollywood, and is set to break into TV production via Apple.

Better late than never for Apple

Although Apple Inc. is joining the already crammed original content space a bit late, it has long been speculated that the company would make a move of this sort. 2016 is expected to yield significant progress for the Apple TV and visual content. The U.S. tech giant comes in at time where leading TV networks are vying heavily against each other for TV dominance.

January saw Netflix significantly up its spending on making original content. Hulu adopted Epixnine August after Netflix had its fill of the network. Amazon too has raised it original programming funding. All this while the likes of Showtime and HBO expand the access to their best content.

Bearing this, Apple Inc. has a lot of great content to produce before it can start rivaling TV industry leaders. The company is yet to form a production team, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Much like Netflix, Apple will roll out all six of the thirty minute episodes simultaneously. Vital Signs is expected to be made available on Apple Music.
