Apple Inc. Watch Controls Tesla Model S In This Amazing Video

Paul Shea

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) are match made in heaven if you believe the hype. Both companies have the ability to take technologies that are already on the market, improve them, and repackage them into something that is so much more than the sum of its parts. A developer is showing us what a fusion of Apple and Tesla may look like with his Watch Model S app.

Allen Wong used the Apple Watch development kit along with the Tesla Motors Model S Application Programming Interface to create something incredible. It’s an electric car whose functions can be controlled directly from the wrist. The video was brought to our attention by Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield over at Transport Evolved. It was made by Allen Wong, a car enthusiast and app developer.

Tesla Model S, Apple Watch Video

Here’s a look at the video.

The range of control that a user has over the Tesla Model S with the Apple Watch is fairly limited right now, though there is something undeniably cool about being able to lock your car from your wrist. That doesn’t seem likely to stay that way forever, however.

The Tesla Motors Apple Watch App uses the company’s official iOS app as a base and replicates the features it offers. With Tesla apparently set on updating Model S software to allow the electric car to drive by itself later this year, full control of a Model S from an Apple Watch may not be that far away.

Tesla goes for mobile control

Tesla Motors is planning on adding the ability to “call” your car while on private property or to make the car park itself inside your garage in an update the company says is coming later on this year. These functions are likely to make it onto the Apple iPhone app, allowing them to be co-opted for the Apple Watch.

On seeing this video, Tesla Motors may even try to build the firm’s own Apple Watch remote control app. Tesla is all about computerizing its vehicles, and creating experiences that other auto companies simply cannot provide.

Glancing at your Apple Watch to check your Model S charging levels and then telling the car to meet you at the front door is thing of science-fictional beauty. That’s exactly the sort of user experience that Elon Musk should be trying to bring to Tesla in order to convince more of humanity that his is the future vision of the car we’ve all been waiting for.

Tesla Motors is a big fan of adding computerized automation and control to its vehicles, and the unofficial Apple Watch App for the company’s Model S sedan is proof of the amazing things that can come out of the company’s dedication to improving the way we use cars.

It’s also the first incredibly compelling reason to own an Apple Watch. It does, however, bump the price from $349 all the way to $70,349, making it an experience you’ll have to pay off over quite a period.
