Apple Inc. enjoys a loyal and eager consumer base. Premium PC buyers famously favor gadgets like those in the Apple Mac line-up. This week Microsoft Corporation showcased a major MacBook challenger. Flaunting strong, attractive specs and an alluring design, can the new Surface Laptop make Mac users ditch their machines?
The products revealed this week were not limited to hardware. Microsoft’s latest laptop comes hand-in-hand with new software too. Tuesday’s unveiling saw the Windows maker introduce another variant of its flagship OS. Dubbed Windows 10 S, this latest operating system is inclined towards cloud applications and services.
Upon its unboxing, the Surface Laptop will run Windows 10 S. There will also be a number of limitations as related to the software it can run. However, the company will freely allow those who find Windows 10 S unappealing to switch to Windows 10 Pro. The offer is only free until the year ends.
Yet it remains obvious that the incoming Surface Laptop is gunning for MacBook lovers. Those closest to the heat are the 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Air 13. The latter is a particular line-up favorite and goes for $1,200. Undercutting this device, the Core i5 editions of the Surface Laptop begin at $999.
The base edition of the Surface Laptop comes equipped with an SSD storage capacity of 128GB and 4 gigs of RAM. Digging out an extra $300 gets buyers another Core i5 device, only this version holds 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. The Surface Laptop already has an edge over the MacBook Air at this point. It starts at $300 less and a better version is obtainable at the same price as it Apple rival.
Microsoft also made a point of highlighting the battery capacity of its latest laptop. The company promises up to 14.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. That accounts for continuous video playback too. On a good day, a MacBook Air can push to around 12 hours of battery.
Surface Laptop over MacBook Air?
At a glance, here are the more attractive aspects about the Surface Laptop:
- Surface Laptop comes with a PixelSense Display of 13.5 inches.
- It is equipped with USB 3.0.
- The core i5 variants house graphics powered by Intel HD 620.
- The Surface Laptop has a touch display.

There are Core i7 editions also up for purchase. Those who are in the market for a 8GB RAM version should know that it goes for $1,599. It comes as the penultimate machine in terms the new Surface Laptop, with standard SSD storage of 512GB. The top-end product features a Core i7 processor too. It holds the same amount of storage, beating the last edition with its 16GB RAM offer. Buyers will need to fork out a whole $2,199 in order to get their hands on this machine.
Microsoft Surface Laptop and Windows 10 S
However, computer standards go beyond hardware specs for most people. The overall experience has a lot to do with software. The public is yet to get a good feel for Windows 10 S and it could prove to be a deal-breaker. An obvious win for the MacBooks is that MacOS is powerful and has none of many restrictions imposed on Windows 10 S.
But there is also the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro — an OS that has somewhat won back the favor of the Windows community. Owners can switch if the new software gets tiresome. Again, the offer is only valid until 31 December. The Surface Laptop arrives in stores on the 15th of June.
